Air Hose Starving Your Tools? Bore, Length, Kinks and Hose Reels

Air tool fading at the end of a long hose, or a hose that stiffens and kinks in the cold?

Size the bore to the run and choose a supple hose. PartsForMachines lists about 270 hoses and reels in its Hose Assemblies range, from airline assemblies to water, fuel and extraction hose. They come from PCL, Norres, Draper, Sealey, SIP and DyMac.

Is a Long or Narrow Hose Starving My Air Tool?

It can be. Air loses pressure to friction along a hose, and the loss grows with length but falls sharply with a bigger bore. So the tool gets less than the regulator shows, and an impact wrench can feel weak.

As a guide, 8mm is fine for a short run, such as the 5m HA2135, and 10mm keeps enough air volume across 20m. For air-hungry tools or longer runs, go up to 13mm. The HA2004 20m 13mm hose assembly is made for work where a narrower bore would hold the tool back, and 13mm assemblies run to 30m. Check the couplings are not the bottleneck, too.

Which Air Hose Stays Flexible in the Cold Without Kinking?

Pick one rated below freezing and built to resist kinks. Most of the standard assemblies in our range use a TPE compound that handles like rubber. The HA2044, for example, is flexible and kink-resistant, rated from -15°C to 60°C, and stands up to oil, fuel, UV and ozone.

If kinks are the main problem, choose SuperFlex hose such as the HA2143SF 20m SuperFlex hose assembly: it is extremely flexible and hard-wearing, with an anti-kink design that keeps airflow loss low. Swivel ends help too, letting the hose turn at each connection instead of twisting.

Is a Retractable Hose Reel Worth It, and Can It Stay Outside?

For a garden or workshop tap, a sturdy one is, because a tangled, kinked hose wastes time. The WHR1512 retractable water hose reel has a ratchet that locks the hose at the length you need and lets it retract tidily. It also has a steel case, 15m of 13mm rubber hose, a metal spray gun and a swivel wall bracket.

It can stay on the wall year-round: it is designed for permanent mounting, and the hose takes hot water up to 90°C and stays flexible down to -40°C. Drain it before a hard frost, though, because water left inside can freeze and split a hose.

Is a Short Whip Hose Worth Fitting?

Usually, yes, on tools that vibrate. A whip hose is a short, flexible length between the tool and the main hose. It is designed to stop vibration travelling back along the line, which eases the strain on couplings and adaptors and helps them last longer.

Our whip hoses run from 0.4m to 0.6m, with bores from 7mm to 13mm. The HA2155 0.4m whip hose has an 8mm bore and an R 3/8 male end, while the HA2116 suits 13mm lines with 100 Series couplings.

What Should I Check Before I Buy?

  • Bore and length to suit the tool and the distance: 8mm for short runs, 10mm across about 20m, 13mm for air-hungry tools.
  • The end on each side: a Vertex, XF-Euro, 100 Series or PBS21 safety coupling, or an Rp, R or 1/4 NPT thread.
  • Hose type: TPE, SuperFlex, polyurethane or nylon coiled, or high-visibility yellow.
  • Working pressure and temperature range, such as 21 bar and -15°C to 60°C on the HA2044.
  • For a reel or pump hose: water or fuel, suction or delivery, and the length, bore and mounting.

Not sure which coupling or thread you have? Contact the PartsForMachines team by WhatsApp, telephone or email with a photo of both ends and the tool, or browse the Hose Assemblies range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 8mm or 10mm hose better for an impact wrench?

Usually 10mm. Leading makers quote a 3/8in (10mm) hose for 1/2in-drive impact wrenches, and the bigger bore loses less pressure along the line. Check your tool's manual for its minimum hose size.

Can I turn the regulator up to make up for a long hose?

Partly. Turn it up only until the tool gets its rated pressure while running, often 6.3 bar (90 psi). A shorter hose or a bigger bore fixes the cause rather than masking it.

How can I tell a good-quality air hose?

Look for stated ratings. The HA2044, for example, has a 21 bar (300 psi) working pressure, a 63 bar burst pressure (a 3:1 safety factor) and BS EN ISO 5774 compliance. Compare those figures before you buy.

Can I repair or shorten an air hose myself?

Yes, if the ends are reusable fittings, which screw or bolt on and can be moved to a new length of hose. Crimped ends are permanent: they need crimping equipment and are thrown away with the hose. A ready-made assembly needs no tools.

Is a coiled hose a good alternative to an air hose reel?

For short reach at a bench or tyre bay, yes: a coiled hose retracts by itself and keeps the floor clear. Polyurethane resists kinking, abrasion and oil, and the HA5221 coiled hose gives 10m of 10mm hose with R 3/8 swivel ends.

Which reel suits a diesel tank?

A steel reel with automatic spring rewind, such as the HR10-1. The HR10-2 comes as a 10m reel with hose and mounting bracket. DyMac tanks have brackets for reels of this class, so check the mounting on yours.

Can I replace just the hose on a tyre inflator?

Yes. Replacement hoses are sold by inflator model, such as the RHA2126 for the AFG Mk4 and the RHA192 for the WM2 range. Match the model, the hose length and the connector at the end.

Can layflat hose go on the suction side of a pump?

No. Layflat is a delivery hose. The suction side needs a hose that will not collapse under negative pressure, such as the 07321 3in suction hose, whose vacuum-sealed spiral wall holds its shape.

Which hose suits exhaust or dust extraction?

For exhaust, heat-resistant ducting rather than airline hose: CP HITEX 481 is made for hot and cold gases, including vehicle exhaust extraction, and resists flying and welding sparks. For dust and fibres, PROTAPE PUR 301 AS has a permanently antistatic wall.

Is high-visibility air hose worth it?

It can be on a busy floor: yellow hose is easier to see, so it is less likely to be hidden underfoot or behind equipment. The HA2046HV gives 20m of 10mm hose with Rp 1/4 swivel ends.
