A puncture on a loaded caravan or trailer can mean a heavy wheel change on a busy verge, so sealant looks tempting. But what does it do to your pressure sensors, balance and tyre?

Caravan or Trailer Tyres: Is Preventive Sealant Worth Putting In?

An under-inflated tyre can fail suddenly, overloading is dangerous, and tyres on a caravan that stands for months age quickly. Sealant fixes none of that, so keep checking pressures, payload and tyre age.

Will Tyre Sealant Damage My TPMS Sensors or Hide a Slow Puncture?

It depends on the sealant and where your sensors sit. Liquid sealant can damage a tyre pressure sensor, and the OK011 and its 25-litre drum version are not compatible with direct sensors mounted on the valve.

With valve-mounted sensors, skip the pre-fill and carry an emergency kit such as the OK022 Get-u-Home emergency tyre repair kit. Balance depends on an even spread: a correctly dosed liquid sealant coats the inside of the tread as the wheel turns, so the first drive matters. Run 3–5km after filling the OK011 so it coats the inner tread before you tow far. OKO says the formula does not separate or dry out in the tyre.

Tyres often lose pressure over a winter of standing. Set pressures cold to the figure on the plate before the first trip, then start with a gentle run before motorway speed. If a wheel still vibrates, have the balance checked.

Sealant Kit Instead of a Spare: Can the Tyre Be Repaired Afterwards?

On the tow car, a kit can get you to the nearest garage instead of a spare, but it is an emergency measure, and repair depends on the damage. The OK022 pairs 500ml of sealant, which seals tread punctures up to 7mm, with a 12V digital compressor that stops at a preset pressure. After using it, keep to 50mph (80km/h) or less on the way to a tyre service.

There the tyre must come off the rim for inspection before any permanent repair, so tell the fitter sealant is inside. Restock with the OK023 500ml replacement bottle. On the caravan itself, keep the spare and treat any kit as a supplement.

Will sealant fix a cut in the sidewall?

No. The OK011 preventive and Get-u-Home emergency sealants are for punctures in the tread area. A cut or bulge in the sidewall, or a tyre that has been driven flat, needs a tyre fitter to inspect it.

Can I use this sealant in water-ballasted tractor tyres?

No. Sealants made for air-filled tyres separate in water. The HS01 Hydro-Seal 20-litre sealant is made for ballasted tyres: mixed at 1 part to 10 parts ballast, it seals tread punctures up to 13mm.
