Body Repair Ram Won’t Retract? Fixes, Oil and 4, 10 or 20 Tonnes
You pump the handle and the ram creeps an inch, or it pushes out fine and then refuses to come back. The usual suspects are the release valve, a coupler, the oil level and trapped air, and each takes minutes to check.
This guide covers those checks first, then tonnage and ram type. PartsForMachines lists 37 hydraulic body repair products, mostly Sealey with some Sykes Pickavant and SIP, from 4 to 20 tonne kits to loose rams and pumps.
Why Won’t My Body Repair Ram Retract, or Only Move an Inch?
A ram that stays out usually has a closed release valve, a loose coupler or no spring to pull it home. Open the valve fully so oil can flow back to the reservoir. Then make sure the coupler is fully hand-tight: a half-made joint blocks the oil.
Some single-acting rams are spring-return; others only close when the load or a push sends them home. Some compact push rams, such as the RE97XC04, have no return spring. Never loosen the coupler to free a stuck ram, as pressure can stay trapped inside. If the ram only moves an inch as you pump, suspect low oil or air.
Is It Low Oil or Air? How Do I Top Up and Bleed the Pump?
It can be either: low oil and trapped air both make a ram advance slowly, in spurts or not at all. Check the oil with the ram fully retracted, and fill only to the level mark; never overfill. Use hydraulic jack oil.
To bleed, set the pump higher than the ram with its plunger pointing down. With no load on the ram, extend and retract it fully several times; the air works back into the reservoir. A tired pump can be swapped for the 610/40 10 tonne hydraulic pump, which suits SuperSnap kits and most leading ram kits; the hose is sold separately.
4, 10 or 20 Tonnes: Which Body Repair Kit Do I Actually Need?
Choose 4 tonnes for panel repairs, 10 tonnes for demanding panel and body work, and 20 tonnes for the heaviest pushing, pulling and spreading; kit weight matters too if you carry it. The RE97/4 4 tonne snap-type kit weighs just 18.86kg and comes in a composite case. The RE97/10 10 tonne snap-type kit weighs 30.69kg.
The RE2000 20 tonne kit is built from steel, uses threaded attachments and travels in two metal cases. Whatever the rating, keep each push straight and centred, because off-centre loads put considerable strain on rams and plungers.
Push Ram or Pull Ram: Which Do I Need to Straighten Bodywork?
Use a push ram to push or spread damage outwards, and a pull ram where crumpled metal has to be drawn back. Most kits come with a push ram, plus tubes and attachments that extend its reach.
For pulling, a ram such as the RE91/05 5 tonne pull ram attaches with its two chain hooks. It has a 130mm stroke and a return spring that speeds the reset between pulls.
What Should I Check Before I Buy?
- the job: panel and body work, or heavier pushing, pulling and spreading
- the joint type: snap, SuperSnap or threaded, and whether it matches tubes you already own
- push, pull or both, and whether the ram has a return spring
- whether a pump and hose are included, or the ram is sold on its own
- weight and storage: a composite case or heavier metal cases

Frequently Asked Questions
Is an air-hydraulic pump worth adding to my kit?
It can be if you pull often and tire of the hand lever. The RE83/840/CWH air hydraulic pump runs on 90–120psi air, gives up to 10,000psi oil pressure and comes with an air hose. It suits SuperSnap rams.
Can I use brake fluid in a body repair pump?
No. Use hydraulic jack oil of the grade your pump’s manual gives. Brake fluid and alcohol can damage the seals and lead to pump or ram failure.
Can a leaking ram or pump be repaired?
Often, yes. Leaks usually come from a loose connection or worn seals, so tighten the joints first. If oil still escapes, fit new seals or have the ram serviced.
Can I use extension tubes from another make?
Often. Our snap-type and SuperSnap kits are made to interchange with other popular makes. Threaded kits need matching threads; the 610/A5 125mm tube adaptor extends their reach. Check the joint type before you mix parts.
Do loose rams come with a pump and hose?
Usually not. A compact ram such as the RE97XC04 needs a separate pump and hose. The 610/45 and RE97.10-COMBO sets bundle a 10 tonne push ram with its pump and hose, so everything matches.
What is a short push ram for?
Jobs with almost no clearance at the push point. The RE97XS10 10 tonne short ram closes to 43mm and opens to 54mm, so it fits gaps where a standard ram will not go.
What does a wedge ram do?
It prises apart panels that have been pushed or pressed together. The RE97.10-A13 wedge ram is rated at 500kg and works with manual or air pumps.
Can I use a body repair ram for other jobs?
Yes. A push ram such as the 610/41 suits pushing, lifting, bending and holding heavy loads in workshops, on farms and on construction sites. Keep the load centred, and never work under a load held only by the ram.
Do I need a straightener for chassis damage?
For a bent chassis or structural damage, a straightener frame lets you pull from several angles. The DZRE21 straightener kit has a variable upright with six preset pull angles plus upright, clamps and chains. It weighs 185kg, so a forklift is needed at delivery.
