Do LED Work Lights Need a Relay? Fuses, Lumens and Radio Crackle
New LED work lights crackling the cab radio, looking dimmer than promised or dying within hours? Fuse every new feed, add a relay where the switch can't take the load, and choose by lumens, interference (EMC) approval and build.
The Work & Scene Lights range at PartsForMachines covers around 245 lights from UTV, Haztec, LAP Electrical, Abracs and Sealey: universal lamps, light bars and direct-fit tractor kits.
Do LED Work Lights Need a Relay and a Fuse?
Fuse every new feed, and in most cases add a relay too. The fuse protects the new cable from overheating. A relay, an electrically operated switch, carries the lamp current, so your cab switch handles only a small control current. Use one whenever the switch or the circuit you tap into isn't rated for the lamps.
Check the draw: the SLX1-21 light bar takes 8A at 12V, the compact LAPS128 under 1A. If only watts are given, divide by the system voltage. Fit the fuse at the battery end, about a quarter above the draw, rounded up to the next standard size but never above the cable's rating.
Why Does My Radio Crackle When the Work Lights Are On?
Often it's the lamps' own electronics. Many LED lamps run from a fast-switching driver, and a poorly suppressed or cheaply made one can give off broadband radio noise. It can travel along the cable and spoil FM or DAB reception. Switch the lights off: if the crackle stops, you've found the culprit.
On lamps already fitted, clip a ferrite choke onto each lamp's supply leads to damp the noise; if the crackle persists, replace the worst offenders. When buying, look for the vehicle EMC standards: CISPR 25 testing, as on the UTV314 compact work light, or ECE R10 approval.
How Bright Should a Work Light Be, and Do Watts Matter?
Judge brightness by lumens, not watts: watts are the power a lamp uses, lumens the light it gives. Two 40W lamps can differ: the UTV305 gives 3,600 lumens, the UTV310 3,200. LEDs turn far more of each watt into light than filament bulbs, so the 27W LED3R is sold as a straight swap for halogen work lights.
The compact UTV302 gives about 800 lumens and the UTV3024 skid-steer lamp 3,200. The 9,600-lumen UTV3023 floods large areas but may need a relay or extra wiring on some machines. Where watts and lumens disagree, trust the lumens and the current draw.
Why Do Some LED Work Lights Fail Early?
Pressure-washing, vibration and weather finish off lesser lamps, so judge a light by its build, not its price. IP68 lamps are sealed against sustained immersion, which matters on plant in standing water; IP69K lamps have passed a close-range test with hot, high-pressure water jets. The LAPS128 compact work lamp has both, plus stainless brackets.
Stainless matters because bracket corrosion usually ends a work light's life on gritted roads and coastal sites. Heat shortens LED life too, so look for an aluminium housing or core. If a new lamp flickers or dies within hours, check that your machine's voltage sits inside the lamp's rated range.
What Should I Check Before I Buy?
- lumens and beam, comparing "actual" with "actual" and "effective" with "effective"
- a voltage range covering your system: 9–32V and 10–30V lamps suit 12V and 24V; some are 12V only
- CISPR 25 or ECE R10 approval if you rely on the radio, GPS or telemetry
- an IP rating to suit washdown and wet work
- the current draw (it sets the relay, fuse and cable) and the plug: Deutsch DT, H4/Delphi or H9
Browse the Work & Scene Lights range, or contact the PartsForMachines team by WhatsApp, telephone or email with your machine model, system voltage and a photo of the old plug.
Product options, delivery options and returns terms are shown on each product page. A 30-day return policy applies to eligible items.
Frequently Asked Questions
Flood or spot: which beam suits rear work lights?
A flood, because the job is lighting the ground just behind the machine. The 90° 7-1190-F flood work light covers the working area; its 10° twin, the 7-1190-S, reaches a distant gate or a high load. For both, pair them or choose a combination beam.
Will an LED work light fit my existing lamp position and plug?
Often, with a direct-fit lamp: the UTV3044 corner light plugs into the Fendt 900 series' existing harness with no extra wiring. Inserts such as the UTV321 H9 unit suit compatible housings, so measure the old lamp. Otherwise, match the plug or use an adapter connector.
How do I wire two LED work lights to one switch?
Through one relay: join both positive leads to its output cable and both negatives to earth, so each lamp gets full voltage. Currents add, so two 8A bars draw 16A: fit a 20A fuse on cable rated for at least 20A, thicker for long runs.
Can I wire an extra LED lamp off my van's reversing-light feed?
Even for a lamp drawing under 1A, it's best to use that feed only to switch a relay and power the lamp from its own fused supply. The relay keeps the lamp's current off the van's original circuit, leaving it only the small coil current.
Can a work lamp double as a reversing light on the road?
Some can: look for ECE R148 reversing-lamp approval, which the LAP-QLUX-R16W carries. Then check the lighting and MOT rules for your vehicle before you use it on the road.
Will a 10–30V work light cause problems on a 12V machine that charges at about 14V?
It shouldn't. About 14V sits well inside a 10–30V or 9–32V range, as those lamps are made for both 12V and 24V systems, and many add over- and under-voltage protection. Do check any single-voltage lamp, such as the 12V 7-1007.
Do LED work lights have to be wired the right way round?
Yes. Connect the positive lead to the switched feed and the negative to earth, as marked. Some lamps, such as the UTV358, have reverse polarity protection, but check the instructions rather than relying on it.
Do LED work lights come with a ready-made wiring loom?
Not always. Ready-made looms with a built-in relay, fuse and switch are made for Deutsch-plug lamps; ask our team which suits your lamp.
How do I stop a rechargeable work lamp running out mid-job?
Check the stated discharge time: the LAPS155BAT rechargeable work lamp is rated at five hours, with 100%, 50% and SOS settings. Keep a second lamp on charge, or use a magnetic lamp that runs from the vehicle socket, such as the LAPS279MAG.
How can I tell how strong a work light's magnet is?
Look for a stated holding force: the 7-1029 searchlight sits on four 34kg magnets for over 130kg of hold. If none is given, send our team the part number and ask before you order.
