Electric Pressure Washer: Why It Stop-Starts and Which One to Buy

Your electric pressure washer keeps switching itself on and off, or you need one that runs without a tap, lasts and shifts mud off machinery. Find the cause first, then choose on water feed, motor and flow.

The Electric Pressure Washers range at PartsForMachines has more than 50 products from Sealey, V-TUF, Draper, SIP and T-T Pumps. They include 38 mains electric washers from 1200W home models to 3kW commercial units, plus cordless, diesel and petrol washers.

Why Does My Pressure Washer Keep Stopping and Starting?

Look for one of two faults: pressure leaking away with the trigger shut, or a pump short of water. On a total-stop washer, releasing the trigger should switch the motor off and hold pressure in the hose. If it kicks back in every few seconds, look for drips at the gun and hose joints: a leak lets that pressure fall.

If the jet surges while you spray, open the tap fully, straighten the hose and clean the inlet filter and nozzle. If an identical washer runs fine on the same tap, the fault is inside yours, such as a worn or leaking pump: get it serviced.

Can an Electric Pressure Washer Run From a Water Butt or Tank?

Yes, if it is self-priming or built to draw water; the rest need a feed from a tap. More than ten of our mains washers can draw water, including the V5240X2, and the 08961 commercial electric washer can lift it up to 2m. The PW540/155, by contrast, must run from a tap.

First fill the suction hose with water so no air is trapped, and fit a water filter. Stay within the maker’s suction height: on many home washers it is only about half a metre.

Induction or Brushed Motor: Which Pressure Washer Will Last?

If you will use it often or hard, an induction motor is worth considering. SIP says its brushless induction motors run quieter and smoother than brushed motors, need less maintenance and last longer. Many washers in our range have one, such as the 2100W induction-motor washer 98678, aimed at trade and heavier home use.

Lighter home washers suit patios, cars and caravans. On commercial models, check the pump too: SIP says its brass-headed triplex crankshaft pump doubles pump life. If a spec does not name the motor type, ask our team.

Is an Electric Pressure Washer Up to Cleaning Tractors and Plant?

Yes, for regular cleaning of tractors, implements and small plant, as long as you choose on flow as well as pressure. High pressure helps shift stubborn grime, but a higher flow cuts the time it takes to wash a large machine. Most home washers in our range give about 6 to 8 litres a minute.

A heavier electric such as the P660/150 commercial washer 08990, built for farms, workshops and yards, gives 660 litres an hour (11 litres a minute) from a 13A supply. The VTUF240T gives 12 litres a minute, and diesel washers in the range reach 21.

What Should I Check Before I Buy?

  • your power supply: a 13A plug, a 16A supply (the 08961 needs one) or 110V on site
  • your water source: a tap, or a butt or tank, in which case a self-priming model and its suction height
  • the flow in litres a minute (litres an hour divided by 60), not just the pressure
  • the motor and pump type, especially for regular or commercial use
  • hose and cable length, total stop, and extras such as a detergent tank, turbo nozzle or foam lance

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an extension lead with an electric pressure washer?

Yes, if it is suitable. Use a lead approved for outdoor use, unwind a cable reel fully and plug in through a 30 mA RCD. An unsuitable or faulty lead can stop the motor starting.

Is there a pressure washer for 110V site supplies?

Yes. The HDC140-110 site washer is built for regular use on 110V, giving 8 litres a minute at up to 100 bar, and can draw from barrels or IBCs after priming. Other 110V models in the range include the V7110.

Is a cordless pressure washer any good?

For light rinsing away from a tap, yes. The 97533 cordless pressure washer kit draws from a bucket through a self-priming hose, at up to 16 bar and 120 litres an hour. For patios and caked mud, choose a mains washer instead.

Why does my pressure washer cut out during use?

The motor’s overload or thermal cut-out may have tripped because it got too hot. Unplug it and let it cool: makers suggest anything from five minutes to an hour. Check the plug and any extension lead, and have it serviced if it keeps happening.

Which pressure figure should I compare between washers?

Compare like with like. Many specs give a working, rated or operating pressure as well as the maximum: the 98678 lists 110 bar working and 165 bar maximum, and the P660/150 130 bar against 150.

What does “effective cleaning power” mean on a spec?

It compares cleaning results, not pump pressure. Sealey says the Rotablast nozzle helps the 140 bar PW3500 reach the same effective cleaning power as a 240 bar washer. When comparing machines, use the actual pressure and flow figures.

Can I put hot water through an electric pressure washer?

Only up to the inlet temperature on its spec or rating plate. The PW420/150, for example, accepts water from 0 to 40°C, and the HDC140 is sold as a cold-water washer. Some makers set a lower limit, such as 20°C, when drawing from a butt.

What is the difference between a snow foam lance and a detergent tank?

A built-in detergent tank feeds cleaner into the jet as you spray. A snow foam lance makes thick foam that can sit on the bodywork and break down dirt before you rinse. Snow foam kits such as the PW1860COMBO include the lance and foam.

How do I stop frost damaging a pressure washer?

Drain it before the first frost: let the water run out of the washer, hose and accessories, then store it somewhere frost-free. Frost can crack or ruin a washer left with water inside. If it does freeze, let it thaw before starting.
