Seized Diesel Injector? Slide Hammer, Puller or Hydraulic Kit
The clamp is off, but the diesel injector will not move. Or it came out and left its copper washer stuck in the head. Forcing it can damage the injector or the bore.
Pull the injector straight out on the right adaptor, lift the old washer with an expanding remover, then clean the seat. PartsForMachines lists 52 injector tools from Sykes Pickavant, Sealey, Govoni, Draper and Fortron, ranging from Sealey slide hammer sets to Sykes Pickavant extractor frames.
Injector Won’t Budge: Slide Hammer, Puller Frame or Hydraulic Kit?
Start with a slide hammer on the correct adaptor. If repeated blows will not shift it, move to a frame that pulls steadily. The VS2059 diesel injector puller set has a slide hammer with a ball joint for confined areas and five adaptors for Bosch, Delphi, Denso and Siemens injectors.
A frame such as the 18590100 universal injector extractor kit stands on adjustable feet and pulls the injector on the engine, so the head can often stay on. It works mechanically, or with a hydraulic cylinder added for more force; check which cylinder suits the frame before you order.
Why Do Injectors Seize, and Why Won’t Twisting Free Them?
Carbon is often the culprit: combustion gas leaking past the seal leaves deposits round the injector, and corrosion adds to the grip. Some injectors end up seized almost solid in the bore.
Gripping the body with Stilsons and twisting is the wrong approach and can damage the threads or the injector itself. Pull along the injector’s axis instead, without lateral stress on the parts around it. The GO449 slide hammer set, for example, drives its impact straight along the axis to break the carbon and corrosion bond, and it removes common rail injectors without lifting the cylinder head.
Old Copper Washer Stuck in the Head: How Do I Get It Out?
Use an expanding seal remover: drop it into the empty bore, tighten the handle so it grips the inside of the washer, then lift it out. The VS2054 injector seal removal tool works this way on seals with an internal diameter of 6.7 to 8.7mm, and the 61809 covers the same range.
Picking at the washer with improvised hooks can mark the bore or leave debris that spoils the new seal. A washer can stay behind when the injector comes out, so look down the bore before you fit anything new.
Seat Caked in Carbon: Brush, Seat Cleaner or Seat Cutter?
Clean the seat first with a brush or seat cleaner; a seat cutter is for restoring a seat that has deteriorated. Carbon left on the seat can stop the new washer sealing and lead to blow-back.
The VS2055 diesel injector seat cleaner set combines seven seat cleaners in flat and angled profiles with a reamer, a T-handle and a 7mm centring pilot. A seat cutter set such as the 30823 re-cuts a worn seat in the head instead: its pilot guide locates in the bore, keeping the reamer on the correct axis.
What Should I Check Before I Order?
- the injector make and its thread size
- whether an engine-specific puller will do, or you need a universal kit for mixed work
- the space around the injector, and whether the hammer needs a ball joint to work there
- the washer’s internal diameter, within the remover’s range
- for a hydraulic cylinder, a 700 bar pump and hose to drive it
Browse the injector tools range, or contact the PartsForMachines team by WhatsApp, telephone or email with the engine code and injector make. A photo of the injector top and the space around it helps.

Frequently Asked Questions
The injector has snapped in the head: does the head have to come off?
Not always. Some kits are designed to extract a broken injector, in many cases with the head left on: the GO537 injector extractor kit, for example, covers Renault, Nissan and Opel 2.0 diesels with the M9R code. Otherwise, ask a diesel specialist.
Will the injector survive being pulled out?
Not always. Some tools are for seized units only and damage the injector beyond repair, such as the VS2077 for Ford EcoBlue 2.0 engines. Others, like the GO449, offer removal methods that help keep the injector intact and reusable when conditions allow.
Do hydraulic cylinders need a separate pump?
Yes. The cylinder is driven by a hydraulic pump and hose: the GO1017 has a 3/8”-18 NPT port for standard 700 bar workshop pumps. The 18590100 frame kit comes without a cylinder, so check you have both.
Which thread adaptor do I need?
One that matches the injector’s make and thread. The 18590100 kit includes Bosch (M17 x 1.0), Delphi (M14 x 1.0), Toyota (M16 x 1.0), Denso (M20 x 1.0) and Siemens (M25 x 1.0 or M27 x 1.0) adaptors. Check the old injector or the manual.
Is an engine-specific puller worth it over a universal kit?
If you work on one engine often, yes. The VS2056 for Mercedes CDi engines includes a cap removal socket, a security hex key and a puller with a 17mm x 1mm thread. Universal kits suit workshops that see many engines.
Is there a puller for Land Rover TD5 injectors?
Yes. The VS2541 suits Defender (1999 to 2007) and Discovery II (1998 to 2005) models with the TD5 engine, codes 10P, 15P and 16P. It uses a slide hammer to draw the injector out along its axis.
Which puller suits Lucas or Bosch clamp-down injectors?
A slide hammer puller with matching thread adaptors. The 08571000 comes with M8, M12 and M14 adaptors and suits cars, vans and heavy goods vehicles.
Which brushes suit an injector bore?
Brushes sized to the bore, on a drive long enough to reach. The VS1910 set has brass, nylon and steel brushes from 8 to 19mm on a 1/4” hex drive, with a 150mm extension for tight spaces.
Will one washer remover fit every injector washer?
No. Each remover covers a set range of internal diameters, such as 6.7 to 8.7mm for the VS2054 and 61809. Measure the inside of a new washer for your engine before ordering, or send our team the engine code.
What is a non-impact slide hammer?
One filled with steel shot, so the force goes in one direction without rebound, which reduces fatigue and shock to nearby parts. The GO438 weighs 3kg and has an M18 x 1.5 connection thread.
