Air Hose Leaking at the Tail? Size, Clip or Repair It Right

Air Hose Leaking at the Tail? Size, Clip or Repair It Right

Your air hose hisses where it meets the fitting, pops off the tail, or has split halfway along. Most fixes need the right tail for the hose bore, the right clip, or a repair connector.

PartsForMachines stocks 125 hose connectors and fittings, mostly from PCL, plus Draper and Sealey. They include hose tails, repairers, tube fittings, tyre valve connectors and brass and push-fit garden-hose fittings.

Why Does My Air Hose Leak or Blow Off at the Hose Tail?

Check three things: the hose is pushed well onto the tail, the clip is the right size and in the right place, and the hose bore matches the tail. Push the hose far enough over the barbs for the clip to sit on them.

Then fit the clip over the barbs, at least 6 mm back from the hose end, never hanging past the end of the barb. Choose a clip sized to the hose’s outside diameter, not a bigger one, which may not clamp evenly. Tighten firmly but not hard: an overtightened worm-drive clip can damage the hose. On 1/4in bore hose, start with a matching tail such as the HC5656 hose tail (6.35 mm i/d to R 1/4).

What Size Hose Tail Fits My Hose, and Can I Force a Near Size?

Match the tail to the hose’s inside diameter, then pick the male thread to suit the port: the two are chosen separately. Our hose tails follow imperial bores of 4.75, 6.35, 7.9, 9.5 and 12.7 mm (3/16 to 1/2in), most in more than one thread size.

A 9.5 mm hose, for example, can take the HC1217 hose tail with an R 1/4 thread, or versions with R 3/8 or R 1/2. Metric hose can fall between these bores, so don’t force a near size. Measure the bore and, if it sits between sizes, send us the measurement before ordering.

Jubilee Clip, Crimped Ferrule or Union Nut: Which Holds Best?

There is no single best: choose by the tools you have and whether you’ll want the joint apart again. A worm-drive (jubilee) clip sized to the hose needs only a screwdriver. Crimped ferrules make a permanent joint: they need a crimping machine set to the right crimp size, and the only way off is to cut the hose.

A coned tailpiece and union nut connect the hose to a male thread. The nut swivels, so you can line the fitting up without twisting the hose. The HC5275/5194 coned tailpiece comes with its Rp 1/4 union nut; some tailpieces are sold without one.

Split or Damaged Air Hose: Can I Join It Instead of Replacing It?

Yes, if the rest of the hose is sound. Cut out the damaged section, push both ends onto a hose repairer that matches the hose’s inside diameter, and clip each side. The HC2985 hose connector/repairer suits 9.5 mm i/d hose, with versions for 6.35, 7.9 and 12.7 mm, saving a full new length.

Check the whole hose first. If it is hard, stiff, cracked, kinked or crushed along its length, replace it: weak spots can give way under pressure.

What Should I Check Before I Order a Hose Fitting?

  • the hose’s inside diameter: 4.75, 6.35, 7.9, 9.5 or 12.7 mm
  • the male thread size of the port the tail screws into, for example R 1/4, R 3/8 or R 1/2
  • a clip sized to the hose’s outside diameter, not the bore
  • for a coned tailpiece, whether the union nut is included or needs ordering with it
  • air hose, garden hose or plastic tube, as each uses its own fittings

Not sure? Send a photo of the old fitting and the print on the hose to the PartsForMachines team by WhatsApp, telephone or email, or browse the hose connectors and fittings range.

Product options, delivery options and returns terms are shown on each product page. A 30-day return policy applies to eligible items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a kit for repairing air hose in the van?

Yes. The HCKIT01 hose connector kit holds hose tails, union nuts, coned tailpieces and reducing bushes in a compact pocket case, with item numbers and descriptions inside the lid to make restocking easy.

How do I get a stiff hose onto a hose tail?

Warm the hose end in hot water for a few minutes until it softens, then push it fully home. Keep it no hotter than you can touch, because too much heat can ruin the hose.

How do I join two female ports of the same size?

Use a double union, which has the same male thread on both ends: the HC6560 for R 1/4, with the HC4281 and HC6898 for R 3/8 and R 1/2. For two different sizes, use a reducing union instead.

Reducing bush or reducing union: what’s the difference?

A reducing bush steps a port down: the HC6892 takes an Rp 3/8 female port to Rp 1/4 female. A reducing union has male threads on both ends, such as the HC6899 (R 3/8 to R 1/4), to join two different-sized female ports.

Open-end or closed-end tyre valve connector: which do I need?

On twin hold-on connectors, closed-end types (red handles) take air straight from a compressor or receiver line, as a non-return valve opens on the tyre valve. Open-end types (black handles) suit PCL inflators and gauges. They are not interchangeable.

Will a brass tap connector work with plastic click fittings?

Don’t count on it. Draper says its brass garden fittings, such as the 36197 tap connector, are made to be used directly only with brass connectors of the right size. Keep to one system, or ask our team which parts pair up.

How do I join 1/2in garden hose to 3/4in hose?

Fit a universal click-on hose connector sized to each hose, then join the two with a double-male push-fit piece such as the JS3026 2-way water hose connector, which takes universal female hose connectors. Check both connectors use that push-fit system.

Can I use plastic tube instead of rubber hose?

Yes, but tube takes its own fittings rather than barbed tails. The range includes equal tees for 4 to 12 mm tube, such as the PET8, and stem reducers like the PSR68, which connects and disconnects by hand without tools.

Can I repair a split garden hose?

Yes. Cut the hose on each side of the split and join the ends with a repair connector of the same size, such as the 36203 brass repair connector for 1/2in hose. Match the connector to your hose before ordering.
