Diesel Nozzle Won't Click Off? Fix Pump, Meter and Filter Faults

The automatic nozzle won’t click off when the tank is full, or clicks off long before it is. The meter reads a couple of litres light against a measured can, or the pump trickles when it should pour. Many dispensing faults come down to flow, air or a blocked filter, and each is quick to check.

PartsForMachines carries 28 parts in its Fuel Tank Accessory range, including nozzles, flow meters, pump kits and generator connection packs from Tecalemit and DyMac.

Why Won’t My Automatic Diesel Nozzle Click Off?

Often the flow is too low, or rising fuel is not reaching the small sensing port at the spout tip. An automatic nozzle uses the fuel passing through it to draw a slight vacuum at that port. When fuel covers it, the vacuum pulls on a diaphragm and the valve snaps shut.

Because the shut-off runs on moving fuel, a weak pump or a clogged filter can starve it, so check the flow first. Seat the spout well into the filler neck; have a nozzle that still won’t shut off repaired or replaced. When replacing parts, match the nozzle to the pump, as in the K-D12V-2 12V pump kit, which pairs a 56 LPM pump with a 56 LPM automatic nozzle.

Why Doesn’t My Fuel Flow Meter Match the Litres I Measured?

Air in the line, a flow rate outside the meter’s range, or a meter that needs calibrating are the common reasons. Test it: open the nozzle fully and run at least 20 litres into an accurate measuring container, at the flow rate you normally use. If the display and the container disagree, calibrate the meter as its manual describes.

A meter counts air as if it were fuel, so reseal any leaking connections first. Tecalemit quotes measuring precision of less than 1% for the FMT 3 electronic flow meter (253591006), a turbine-wheel counter.

Does the Filter Go Before or After the Pump?

After it: a dispensing filter belongs on the pump outlet, not on the suction side, so dirt is caught before fuel reaches the machine. Our 56 LPM DyMac diesel pump kits come with an inline water and particle filter.

The filter in those kits deals with water as well as dirt. A water-absorbing element soaks up water until it reaches capacity, then the flow slows down.

Why Is My Diesel Transfer Pump So Slow?

A dirty inlet strainer or a plugged filter is a common cause, so check what the fuel has to pass through first. Clean the strainer screen, then change the filter if delivery is still poor.

If you are replacing the pump, match it to the power you have. The 56 LPM DyMac kits come in three supplies: 12V runs off a vehicle or plant battery away from fixed power, 110V suits a site transformer, and 230V suits mains power in a yard or depot.

What Should I Check Before I Order?

  • the fluid: diesel, AdBlue or oil, as some meters are made for one fluid, such as the DUK-FM-217 for diesel and the DUK-FM-099 for AdBlue
  • the flow: the pump’s rating against the nozzle and meter (a 56 LPM pump sits inside a 10–90 LPM meter’s range)
  • the power supply: 12V, 110V or 230V
  • the threads and ends: 1″ BSP male/male or female/female meters, 1/2″ or 3/8″ BSPP generator hoses, and a 24mm or 25mm nozzle spout
  • the tank and orientation: horizontal or vertical meter versions, and whether the part suits your tank type (some packs and meters are not for Polymobile tanks)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my nozzle click off before the tank is full?

Often the flow is faster than the filler neck can take, so fuel splashes onto the sensing port. Ease off the lever a little. If it keeps happening, debris may be clogging the shut-off air path and the nozzle needs cleaning.

Which nozzle spout size do I need?

Measure the filler neck of the machines you fill most. Spouts come in different sizes, such as the 24mm A 2010 (252620000) and the ZV 2000 nozzle with a 25mm outlet (252300000).

Which way round does a flow meter fit?

Follow the arrow on the body. The Z400 mechanical flow meter (253010100) reads flow from bottom to top, and the FMOG 100 comes in horizontal and vertical versions, so pick the one that matches how your pipe runs.

Can one meter measure both diesel and AdBlue?

Some can. The FMT 3 suits a range of liquids, including diesel, AdBlue, RME and water. Others are built for one fluid, so check the fluids your meter lists before you swap it between tanks.

How do I know a water-absorbing filter needs changing?

Fuel delivery slows noticeably once the element has soaked up all the water it can hold. Change it then, and keep a spare element by the tank so a slow pump never holds up a refuel.

What is a generator connection pack for?

It links a tank’s pipe block to a generator with feed and return hoses and ISO 7241 Type A quick-release couplers. The GEN CON PAC-1/2″-5M generator connection pack has two 5m hoses; 10m and 3/8″ versions are listed too.

Can I dispense engine or gear oil with these parts?

Yes, with oil-specific parts. The 027240532 nozzle with sight glass is for engine oil and the 027240552 is for gear oil, while HDZ FMOG digital meters come in engine oil and gear oil versions.

Is there an option that needs no power supply?

Yes. The OK 9 B hand pump (122029100) is worked by hand and comes with a 1.5m dispensing hose, so there is no cable or battery to connect. Ask our team to confirm it suits the fluid you dispense.
