Hot Pressure Washer Not Heating? Burner, Soot and Scale Fixes

You bought a hot washer to shift grease, but the burner will not fire, the exhaust is smoking, or the water comes out barely warm. Or you are still deciding whether hot water is worth the extra cost.

Most heating faults come down to water flow, fuel, soot or scale, and each has a clear check. PartsForMachines stocks 19 hot pressure washers from V-TUF, SIP, Sealey and Clarke. They range from compact 230V machines to 415V and petrol-engine units.

Is a Hot Water Pressure Washer Worth It Over a Cold One?

Yes, if you mainly clean oil, grease or fats: SIP says heated water breaks down oils and fats more effectively than cold water alone. That suits fleet vehicles, workshops and food production areas. Many models, such as the PW2000HW, are hot and cold machines, so one washer can cover both jobs.

Output temperatures vary. The compact 230V 08953 hot pressure washer reaches 90°C, some 230V models reach 110°C, and several larger machines run up to about 150°C. The trade-off is diesel for the burner and bulk: several bigger models weigh over 100kg.

Why Won't the Burner on My Hot Pressure Washer Light?

Usually because one thing it needs to fire is missing: water flow, a thermostat setting, fuel or a spark. Check them in that order. The burner only runs while enough water is flowing, so turn the water supply fully on and hold the trigger open.

On Total Stop machines such as the PW2500HW hot water pressure washer, the burner also stops when you release the trigger. Next, make sure the thermostat is switched on and turned up. Then look for fuel in the tank and a clogged fuel filter. If it still will not fire, have the ignition electrodes and the fuel nozzle checked.

Why Is My Hot Washer Smoking and Sooting Up the Coil?

Sooty smoke usually means the burner is dirty or badly adjusted, for example its air setting. Do not ignore it. Soot builds up on the outside of the heating coil and cuts heat transfer, so the water heats less well and the burner runs less efficiently.

Have the burner cleaned and set up correctly, and clean the soot off the coil. Exhaust fumes are poisonous, so keep the machine outdoors or in a well-ventilated space while you work.

How Do I Stop Scale Building Up Inside the Heating Coil?

Descale before scale takes hold, and on hard water consider a machine with a built-in softener. Hard water leaves mineral deposits inside the coil; the build-up restricts flow, and a loss of pressure can be a sign the coil needs descaling. Harder water scales up faster.

Some machines help: the 08962 steam pressure washer has an integral water softener and descaling tank to protect its boiler. Descaling uses corrosive chemicals, so follow the maker's manual for the product, the dilution and the protective clothing.

What Should I Check Before I Buy a Hot Pressure Washer?

  • the power: 230V single-phase, 400V or 415V three-phase, or a petrol engine for sites without mains
  • the maximum temperature: anything from about 85°C to about 150°C, with steam settings on some
  • flow and pressure together, in litres per hour or minute as well as bar
  • the burner fuel and tank size, from 4 litres on small machines to 24-litre removable tanks
  • protection features such as Total Stop, low-water and low-fuel cut-outs, frost protection or a softener

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run HVO or kerosene instead of diesel?

Only if the operator's manual approves that fuel. Most of our hot washers are diesel-fired, while the RAPIDVTS1210HPC hot pressure washer and the RAPIDVTS1520HPC also list HVO compatibility. If in doubt, ask us before you fill the tank.

Why does the burner stop when I let go of the trigger?

That is normal on machines with Total Stop. Releasing the trigger switches off the motor and heater, which cuts energy use and wear. Squeeze the trigger again and the pump and burner start back up.

How do I protect a hot washer from frost?

Drain it and flush antifreeze through before freezing weather, because water left inside can freeze and damage the machine. The 08957 hot water pressure washer comes with an antifreeze kit. Store the machine somewhere frost-free if you can.

Can I feed it from a hot water supply to save fuel?

Only up to the maximum inlet temperature in the manual. The 08957, for example, is rated for inlet water from 0 to 40°C. Check the plate or manual on your machine before you connect a warm supply.

What is the difference between hot water and steam models?

Mainly the top temperature. Steam-capable models such as the 08962 and 08964 run from 85°C to 140°C, and some larger machines reach about 150°C. Many compact hot water models top out at 90°C to 110°C.

Is it safe to use a hot pressure washer indoors?

Only with good ventilation. The burner exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, so run the machine outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, never in a confined space such as a closed workshop.

Can I use detergent with a hot washer?

Yes. Most of our hot washers have a detergent tank, bottle or low-pressure chemical feed: the 08954 carries a 4.5-litre tank, for example, and the 08953 a 350ml bottle. Use the detergents your machine's maker recommends.

How much diesel does a hot washer use?

It varies by machine and setting. SIP rates the 08953 at 1.99kg of fuel an hour, and tanks range from 4 litres on that model to 24 litres on larger machines. Check the run time you need between refills.

How do I know when the heating coil needs cleaning?

Watch for sooty smoke, slower heating or a drop in pressure. Soot points to the burner and outer coil; lost pressure points to scale inside. If your machine has a gauge, note its normal reading so a drop stands out.
