Will Tyre Sealant Stop Punctures in Tractor, Plant and HGV Tyres?

by Admin

Will Tyre Sealant Stop Punctures in Tractor, Plant and HGV Tyres?

A thorn, nail or quarry rock can leave a tractor, dumper or lorry parked up.

Sealant can keep it working if it goes in first and suits the risk. PartsForMachines has 24 OKO and Air-Seal products in its Off Road, Heavy Duty and HGV tyre sealant range, from 475ml bottles to bulk IBCs.

Does Tyre Sealant Really Work, and How Big a Hole Will It Seal?

Yes, on tread punctures within the grade’s rating. The liquid coats the inside of the tyre; when the tread is pierced, it is forced into the hole and seals it as the wheel turns.

Ratings differ by grade. The OK005 Off-Road 25-litre drum seals tread punctures up to 12mm, and Truck & Bus seals multiple tread punctures up to 8mm. Air-Seal Heavy Duty is rated to seal 95% of tread punctures up to 15mm. Armour-Seal is rated to plug holes up to 30mm in heavier-ply tyres, within one or two wheel revolutions. The maker says it can go in any size of tyre but is better suited to 16-ply and above.

Should Sealant Go In Before a Puncture or After One?

Before. Most sealants in this range are sold as puncture prevention, so the sealant is already in the tyre when a thorn or nail strikes. The Off-Road grade goes into new or freshly fitted tyres, and one treatment seals multiple punctures as they occur, because only a small amount is used on each.

After treating a tyre with Off-Road, drive 3 to 5km so the sealant spreads evenly around the inside of the tread. For a first installation across several machines, the OK005Combo bundle pairs the 25-litre Off-Road drum with the application pump.

How Much Sealant Does a Tractor or Plant Tyre Need?

It depends on the tyre size and the grade, so work to the dose for your tyre size. For example, the HD01 Heavy Duty 20-litre pail will treat one eight-wheeler truck, the 24-litre bag-in-box one telehandler, and a 20-litre Armour-Seal pail two or more loading shovels.

To measure each dose, the OK024 application pump has an adjustable stroke, and the Air-Seal installation pump delivers 250ml per calibrated stroke. Unsure? Send our team your tyre sizes.

Will Tyre Sealant Corrode the Rims or Damage the Tyre?

Not if you choose a rim-safe grade. Off-Road is water-based, non-corrosive and safe for tyres, and will not corrode rims, dry out or separate. Truck & Bus and Mining X-Tra are non-corrosive and safe for tyres and rims too. The Air-Seal general purpose sealant is safe on alloy and steel wheels and will not set, harden or damage the tyre. Ask us about other grades.

For farm and construction tyres, the OK019 LifeLong tyre conditioner (not a sealant) leaves an anti-corrosive layer that protects steel and alloy rims, even when parked. OKO says it is not meant for vehicles that regularly exceed 50mph.

What Should I Check Before I Buy?

  • The machine and where it works: on the road, off the road or both.
  • Tyre size, tubeless or tubed, and the ply rating if you are considering Armour-Seal.
  • The puncture risk, from thorns and nails to rock, against each grade’s rating.
  • How many tyres you will treat, to choose between a bottle, pail, drum or IBC.
  • How you will apply it: injector, drum pump, installation pump or pouring in with the bead broken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which sealant suits road-going lorries, trailers and coaches?

Truck & Bus or Heavy Duty. The OK009 Truck & Bus 25-litre drum is engineered for heavy on-road use in trucks, buses, semi-trailers and trailers over about 5 tonnes. Air-Seal Heavy Duty covers trucks, trailers, skip wagons and coaches, on and off the road.

Which sealant suits a ride-on mower, quad or compact tractor?

Off-Road suits tractors, quad bikes and other slow-moving off-road vehicles, and the general purpose grade also suits ride-on mowers. The OK001 1250ml bottle has a mess-free cap with a built-in valve core remover and filling tube, and the OK025 injector measures doses in 5ml steps.

Does tyre sealant work in tubed tyres?

Yes for Off-Road, Heavy Duty and Armour-Seal, which work in both tubed and tubeless tyres. Mining X-Tra is for tubeless OTR tyres, best above 25 inches wheel diameter. A tubeless tyre is usually marked ‘Tubeless’ or ‘TL’ on the sidewall.

How do I put sealant in through the valve?

Remove the valve core, inject the dose for your tyre size, refit the core and reinflate, then drive to spread it: 3 to 5km for Off-Road. The OK024 pump works against up to 60psi, so let a higher-pressure tyre down to 60psi first.

Which pump goes with a 25-litre drum or 20-litre pail?

The 25-litre Off-Road, Mining X-Tra and Truck & Bus drums take the OK024 application pump; the 20-litre Heavy Duty and Armour-Seal pails take the IPK01 pump kit. The BIB bag-in-box needs no pump: break the bead and pour in the right number of 3-litre bags.

Can sealant go in tyres with TPMS sensors?

It depends where the sensors sit. OKO says Off-Road and Mining X-Tra are not compatible with direct TPMS using valve-mounted sensors, and Truck & Bus is not compatible with most of them. Rim-mounted sensors generally suit all three. Ask our team about other grades.

Will sealant cure a slow leak at the rim or bead?

It can. Heavy Duty is made to stop rim, bead and other slow air leaks as well as sealing tread punctures, and the general purpose grade also prevents rim and bead leaks. If air keeps escaping after treatment, ask our team.

Does sealant last the life of the tyre?

Several do. Off-Road stays active for the tyre’s full legal life, and one general purpose application lasts the tyre’s life. In typical long-haul use, Truck & Bus stays active for about 100,000 to 140,000km and can be topped up while the tread is legal.

Will a tyre repairer still fix a tyre with sealant in it?

It can still be repaired if the damage allows, but tell the repairer the tyre is treated. A permanent repair means taking the tyre off the rim and inspecting it inside, and the sealant often has to be removed first.

Is tyre sealant hazardous to handle or store?

Not the OKO range, which is classed as non-hazardous. Truck & Bus and Mining X-Tra also contain no flammable or toxic ingredients and stay stable in storage, and the general purpose sealant has an indefinite shelf life. Ask us about other grades.
