L, M or H Class Vacuum? Pick a Dust Extractor That Keeps Pulling
Your old wet and dry vac chokes on sanding dust and leaves a fine film behind, or you need something safe for clearing out the wood burner.
Start with the dust class, then check auto-start and filter cleaning. The Vacuum Cleaners range at PartsForMachines has 87 products from Sealey, V-TUF, Draper, PCL, SIP and Chicago Pneumatic, ranging from cordless ash vacs to H-class dust extractors.
L, M or H Class: Is M Class Overkill for My Workshop?
Usually not, if you sand, cut or drill wood or masonry with power tools: the class you need depends on the dust you make, not the size of the workshop. The letters stand for the dust hazard each class handles (low, medium or high), and H class covers the most hazardous dusts, including those that cause cancer.
For on-tool extraction, British safety guidance points to M or H class; L class only suits lower-toxicity dust such as plasterboard gypsum. The PC150BV 15-litre M-class vacuum filters down to 1 micron, while the MIDIH240 21-litre H-class extractor suits higher-risk dust.
Will the Vacuum Start Itself When I Switch On My Sander?
It will if it has an auto-start socket, sometimes called a power take-off. Plug the sander into the vacuum’s socket, connect the sander’s dust port to the hose, and the vacuum starts and stops with the tool. The PC300SDAUTO also runs on for 10 seconds after the tool stops to clear the hose, and the PC400MA has two air fittings that switch it on with an air tool.
Check the socket rating against your tool, especially on 110V. The PC380M110V 38-litre M-class extractor takes tools up to 660 watts, while the 230-volt PC380M takes up to 1,490 watts.
Why Does My Vacuum Lose Suction So Quickly on Fine Dust?
Usually because fine dust has clogged the filter, though a full bag or a blocked hose cuts suction too. Built-in filter cleaning helps: the 86685 vibrates its filter after use, the PC150BV has a filter-shake function and the MINIHSV110 cleans its filter at the push of a button.
Clean or replace the filter when needed, change the bag once it is full and clear any blockage from the hose. If your machine has a low-airflow warning, stop and deal with the cause as soon as it comes on.
Can I Vacuum Ash From a Wood Burner or BBQ?
Yes, once it is completely cold, and only with a vacuum built for ash, not a regular vacuum or shop vac. Ash can hold enough heat to restart a fire for days, so let it cool in the grate first.
The ash vacs in our range all have a metal-lined or heat-resistant hose and a HEPA filter to hold fine ash. The PC200A 20-litre ash vacuum takes ash up to 40°C, and its metal-covered HEPA filter stops ash leaking back into the room, so keep it fitted. If the filter clogs, put the hose nozzle in the blower socket and press the cleaning button.
What Should I Check Before I Buy?
- the dust you make: M or H class for sanding, cutting and drilling, and L class only for lower-toxicity dust such as plasterboard
- the supply: 230V for the workshop, or a 110V model if your sites run on 110V
- the auto-start socket rating against your biggest tool, plus an adaptor to fit its dust port
- built-in filter cleaning and a low-airflow warning, to keep suction up on fine dust
- for liquids, a foam or sponge filter and a shut-off valve, and a drum size that suits the job

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a HEPA filter as good as an M-class extractor?
Not on its own. Safety guidance warns against simply fitting a HEPA filter to a general vacuum for hazardous dust. An M- or H-class machine also warns you when airflow drops; the MIGHTYHSV240, for example, pairs its M-class rating with H13 filtration.
Is the airflow warning on an M-class extractor worth having?
Yes, especially in a shared workshop where nobody owns the filter. On the 28230 M-class dust extractor and its 110V version, the 28229, an LED lights when airflow drops below 20m/s: clean the filter, change the bag or check the hose.
Do I have to use the maker's own dust bags?
Use the bags made for your machine. V-TUF quotes 99.9% capture for the MINIHSV240 when used with the correct V-TUF bags, and the PC380M takes its own M-class dust bags and tank liners.
Can I empty and reuse disposable dust bags?
No. Single-use bags are not meant to be emptied and reused. Seal the full bag, put it in the right waste container and fit a new one.
Can I fit a finer filter to my ordinary wet and dry vac?
Only the filter made for your model, such as the PC200CFL cartridge for the PC200SDAUTO and PC300SDAUTO. If you need M-class protection, buy an M-class machine rather than upgrading the filter.
Can one extractor double as a workshop or van vacuum?
Usually, yes. Many M-class wet and dry extractors come with floor tools: the PC380M, for example, has a multi-surface floor nozzle, a round brush and a 2.5m hose, plus a foam filter for wet pick-up.
Can I vacuum up water with a dust extractor?
Only if it is rated for wet and dry use. Set it up for wet use, often with a foam or sponge filter; a shut-off valve or float stops overfilling and protects the motor. Some, like the RUCKVAC-ION backpack, are dry use only.
Do I need a 110V vacuum for building sites?
Often, in Great Britain, where building sites commonly run portable tools on a reduced-voltage 110V supply. Check what your sites use: several extractors come in matching site and mains pairs, such as the MIGHTYHSV110 and MIGHTYHSV240.
Is a wall-mounted garage vacuum easy to take down?
It can be. The 36313 wall-mounted wet and dry vacuum works on its rack or lifts off it to go to the job, with 4m and 3m hoses and a remote control in the hand grip.
Which vacuum suits car valeting?
A valeting machine such as the PC310, which pumps cleaning fluid into carpet and upholstery, then extracts it. It has a 3.5-litre detergent tank plus carpet and hand lances; the 75442 shampoo and wet and dry vacuum also handles everyday workshop clean-up.
