Beacon Knocked Off or Not Flashing? Fixings, LED and Faults
A beacon that gets swiped off by a hedge, slides about on the roof or refuses to flash is no use to anyone. The cause is often the wrong fixing, the wrong voltage or a fuse or plug fault.
PartsForMachines stocks 196 beacons, mounts and spares from LAP Electrical, Haztec, Ashtree, UTV Products, Sealey and Draper in its beacon range, from magnetic and flexi-DIN LED units to rotating halogen models.
Magnetic, DIN, Flexi-DIN or Bolt-On: Which Beacon Fixing Suits My Machine?
Pick the base that matches what is already on your machine. Many beacons come in one body with a choice of magnetic, DIN pole, flexi-DIN pole, 3-bolt or single-bolt base.
A magnet suits temporary jobs or a beacon shared between machines, needs no drilling, but must sit on a steel panel. DIN and flexi-DIN bases suit a machine with a beacon pole, while bolt fixings are the permanent choice on a cab roof, roof bar or equipment frame. For a beacon post made from 25mm pipe, the UTV806 25mm pipe clamp beacon post is one fixing option; check the pipe diameter before you order.
Beacon Keeps Getting Knocked Off by Branches: What Mount Survives?
A flexi-DIN fitting or a low-profile beacon copes best. The flexi-DIN base has a flexible section that soaks up knocks from low branches and barn doors, as on the LFB 040 flexi-DIN LED beacon.
If height is the real problem, go low. The 3-3751-x-RM extra low profile magnetic beacon stands just 85mm tall and sits on an 80kg magnetic mount, so it is less likely to snag or be dislodged; the 3-3751-x-M is lower still at 58mm.
LED or Rotating Halogen: Which Beacon Is Easier to See and Lasts Longer?
For most machines LED is the easier choice: there is no bulb to change and no motor spinning a reflector. It can draw less current too: a rotating beacon with a 55W H1 bulb draws about 4.6A at 12V, whereas the rechargeable LPB 020BAT LED beacon draws 1.8A.
Which type road users spot more easily is still debated, but you no longer have to give up the sweeping look. The RCB040LED Agri LED beacon is an LED version of a rotating halogen ‘Agri’ beacon, with rotating, double and quad flash patterns. Ashtree, for one, describes its single-bolt LED beacon as longer-lived and lower-powered than traditional rotating beacons.
Beacon Not Flashing, or Flashing Oddly? What to Check First
Start with the cheap checks: the switch, the fuse and the plug. Some magnetic beacons use a lead with a fused plug, so check the fuse and plug before blaming the beacon. Then look along the lead for damage and check there is power at the beacon end.
A beacon moved from another machine may simply be the wrong voltage: some rotating beacons are 12V only, and some compact beacons are built for 24V. On a rotating beacon, check the bulb too. If the light works but the pattern looks wrong, it may simply have been switched to another one; the LFB 040, for example, offers four patterns and remembers the last one picked.
What Should I Check Before I Order a Beacon?
- the fixing on your machine: DIN pole socket, a steel panel for a magnet, 1-bolt or 3-bolt holes, or a tube for a clamp post (measure it)
- system voltage: 12V, 24V or multi-volt, as some rotating models are 12V only
- clearance under doors, sheds and branches; choose flexi-DIN or low profile if it is tight
- lens colour: amber, clear, green or amber/green
- power: plug-in lead, hard-wired or rechargeable, and whether two beacons need to flash together

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a magnetic beacon stay put at road speed?
Check its speed rating first. Some magnetic rotating beacons are rated to 70mph, while the rechargeable LPB 020BAT is rated to 40mph. Whichever you choose, seat the base squarely on a steel panel.
Can I use a beacon without wiring it in?
Yes. A rechargeable magnetic beacon such as the LPB 020BAT battery beacon gives about 4 hours of continuous flash per charge and takes 6 hours to recharge. In-car and mains charging options come with it.
Where should a beacon go for the best visibility?
High up, where the cab or a load cannot hide it from any side; if one cannot manage that, fit a second, perhaps on a twin pole mount. In Great Britain, for example, the lamp centre must be at least 1200mm off the ground.
Will a 12V beacon work on a 24V machine?
Only if it is rated for both. Many LED beacons run on 10–30V, but some rotating beacons are 12V only and some compact beacons are designed for 24V, so check the label against the machine before swapping it over.
Why does my dash show a fault after fitting a beacon?
On some newer tractors, a standard beacon can trigger dashboard fault codes. A CANBUS error-free beacon such as the UTV613 pole-mounted beacon, designed for John Deere R Series and Fendt machines, avoids this. Ask your dealer about other makes.
Do rotating beacons come with a bulb?
It depends on the model. In one range, the 12V rotating beacons include a bulb while the 12/24V versions come without, so order the right bulb for your voltage, for example H1 55W at 12V or 70W at 24V.
Can two beacons flash in step?
Many can. The 3-bolt and single-bolt LFB models can be linked for synchronised flash, and several low-profile LED beacons have a sync option for multiple units. Check before buying a pair, as not every model links.
What does a green beacon mean on a machine?
On kits such as the AVS-GBK1, it shows seat belt use: a green flexi-DIN beacon is paired with a fixed-connection seat belt so the two work together. Other machine-status uses exist, so check your site’s rules. Amber/green dual-lens beacons are available too.
