How Much Weight Can Garage Shelving Hold? Stop Sag and Tipping

Shelves bowing, a unit that rocks when loaded, or a 200kg-per-shelf claim that sounds too good to be true? Size shelving by your heaviest shelf, keep heavy items low, fix tall units to the wall and match the shelf deck to the load.

PartsForMachines lists 70 Sealey and Draper products in its shelving range, from plastic units rated at 25kg per shelf to beam racking rated at 1000kg per level.

Do I Need Heavy-Duty Racking, or Will a Standard Shelving Unit Do?

It depends on what your fullest shelf will weigh, not on how sturdy the frame looks. Add up that shelf box by box, then pick a unit whose per-shelf rating comfortably beats the total.

Light items such as bulbs, filters or cleaning products suit plastic units rated at 25kg per shelf. Boxes of parts and hand tools add up quickly: four 40kg boxes make 160kg, already too much for a 150kg-per-shelf unit such as the AP6150. For gearboxes or full tool cases, look at racking such as the AP6372 mesh-shelf racking, rated at 640kg per level.

Per Shelf or Per Unit: What Does a Shelving Load Rating Mean?

The per-shelf figure is the most one level should carry; the unit figure is usually that number times the shelves. The AP7200 is rated at 200kg per shelf and 1000kg in total, but that never lets one shelf take 400kg while another sits empty. Treat them as two separate limits and stay within both.

Spread the weight evenly, too. Draper, for example, rates the 05227 wire-shelf unit at 364kg per shelf, evenly distributed, so avoid piling heavy boxes in one spot.

Should I Fix My Shelving to the Wall, and What Keeps It Stable?

Yes: fix tall freestanding units to the wall, or to the floor, wherever the instructions allow, to stop them toppling. Full-height units can be tall and narrow: the AP6150 stands 1800mm high but is only 300mm deep.

Keep heavier loads on the lower or middle shelves, with light, bulky items up top. Stand the unit on a level floor and check it is upright before loading. Never exceed the rated load on any shelf, and if you are unsure what your wall will take, ask our team before drilling.

Why Are My Shelves Sagging, and How Do I Stop It?

Board shelves, whether MDF or chipboard, slowly creep: they keep bending a little more under a heavy load left in place for months, and damp air makes it worse.

Spread the weight and move the heaviest items lower. The APR2701 beam racking comes without shelf panels, so you fit your own boards. Sealey says the APR/CPS602 shelving panel support stops the shelf panels sagging excessively, and recommends it where shelves stay near full load for long periods. When you choose boards, go thicker, because a thicker board bends less, or pick a unit with steel mesh shelves instead.

What Should I Check Before I Buy?

  • your fullest shelf’s weight against the per-shelf rating, not the unit total
  • width and depth against your boxes and space, and height against the ceiling and your reach
  • the shelf deck (board, steel mesh, steel or plastic), matched to the load and how long it stays there
  • your wall and floor: what the wall is made of, and whether the floor is level
  • room to grow: extension bays, a corner unit or 2-piece uprights

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add another bay to my racking later?

Yes, with the matching extension. The AP6372E pack adds one upright end frame and four mesh shelves to an AP6372 or AP6572, and you can keep adding bays to make a continuous run. Ask the maker before mixing in parts from another system.

Will standard storage boxes fit on 300mm-deep shelves?

Only if the box, including its lid lip and handles, is no deeper than 300mm. Measure first, then pick the depth: the AP6150 is 300mm deep, the AP6350 400mm and the AP6372 600mm.

Is plastic shelving strong enough for a garage?

For light items, yes. Plastic units such as the APPR3 to APPR5 carry 25kg per shelf, 75kg to 125kg in total, and weigh only 4kg to 5.5kg, so they are easy to move. Put heavy parts and toolboxes on steel.

How do I get heavy boxes onto high shelves safely?

Keep them off the high shelves in the first place: heavy items are easiest to handle at around thigh height, with lighter, less-used things above. Never climb the shelving to reach the top; stand on a step stool or ladder on firm, level ground.

Will my garage floor take the weight of a loaded unit?

Check rather than assume: the floor should carry the unit at full load, not just be level. A floor that settles can push racking out of upright, so if the concrete is cracked, sloping or crumbling, have it checked before loading heavy racking.

Do I need tools to put shelving together?

Often not. Many units clip together: the AP6350 needs no nuts or bolts, and the 21659 needs no specialist tools. For bigger systems such as the 24222 racking, two people are recommended for assembly.

What are 2-piece uprights for?

They let one unit become two. The AP6350, AP900R and AP7200 can stand as a single full-height bay or split into two separate shelf units or workstations, so one purchase can cover two spots in the garage.

Can I put small pallets straight onto racking?

Use racking built for it. The APR3001 beam racking is designed for direct loading of small storage pallets, with 1000kg per level and an overall size of 2250 x 1000 x 2000mm. It is heavy, so arrange extra help for delivery.

Is there shelving that leaves the floor clear for a mower or compressor?

Yes. The APWSR01 wall-mounted rack measures 1218 x 600 x 650mm, holds 100kg and comes with a hardware pack. Mount it high enough to clear the machine below, and ask our team if you are unsure about your wall.

Can I store tyres on ordinary shelving?

Use a purpose-made tyre rack if you can. The STR600 holds up to 26 tyres, 13 per level, with 200kg per level, and the STR001 mounts on a wall or the floor, holding 90kg when wall mounted.
