Mechanic’s Tool Kit: Which Drive Sizes, and What Gets Left Out?

Mechanic’s Tool Kit: Which Drive Sizes, and What Gets Left Out?

You want one kit that handles the car, the van and the odd machine, without rounding nuts or leaving you a socket short. Judge a kit by its drive sizes, socket type and size list, not its piece count, then add what it leaves out.

The Tool Kits range at PartsForMachines has 174 products from Sealey, Draper, Sykes Pickavant, SIP and PCL. They range from mechanic’s and workshop kits to insulated, EV and cordless kits.

1/4, 3/8 or 1/2in: Which Drive Sizes Should a Tool Kit Cover?

Choose by the sizes you turn: 1/4in drive for the small nuts, 1/2in for the big ones, and 3/8in to bridge the two. In typical kits, 1/4in sockets run from 4mm to 12–14mm, and 1/2in sockets from 10–15mm up to 24–32mm. 3/8in sets usually run from 6–10mm to 19–22mm.

Many kits pair 1/4in and 1/2in only. Some that advertise three drives carry little more than E-sockets and adaptors in 3/8in, so read the size list, not the headline. For farm machinery, the 10002 agricultural technicians tool kit adds a 26-piece 3/4in set in metric and AF sizes.

How Do I Stop Sockets Rounding Off Nuts?

Start with the fit. Use the exact size, metric or AF, and push the socket fully on and square before you pull. If it starts to slip, stop and check the socket and size before the nut rounds.

Some size lists also show the socket type: kits such as the 70282 90-piece tool kit use six-point sockets in both drives.

Is a 100-Piece Kit Worth It, or Should I Buy What I Need?

A kit is the quickest way to get a working set, but count the sockets and spanners, not the pieces. Bits, hex keys and accessories make up much of a big total. The 08627 100-piece tool kit counts a 20-piece bit set and 10 hex keys alongside its 25 sockets; in the AK7400, 26 of the 100 pieces are terminals.

If you already own bits and hex keys, a smaller socket-and-spanner kit saves buying them twice. Weight matters too: the AK7400 case kit weighs 7.95kg, and the S01266 three-drawer chest kit 16.8kg.

Which Sizes and Tools Do Most Kits Leave Out?

Most kits leave out a torque wrench and breaker bar, and many skip sizes. The AK7400’s 1/2in sockets skip 16, 18, 20 and 21mm, and many kits stop their spanners at 17 or 19mm. Several hex key sets jump from 6mm to 8mm, so if a job needs a 7mm hex, look for it by name.

In our range, only large workshop and technician’s kits include a torque wrench, and only the technician’s kits add a breaker bar. The 12871 automotive technicians tool kit, for example, has a 30–210Nm torque wrench and a 640mm breaker bar. Otherwise, plan to buy both separately.

What Should I Check Before I Buy?

  • the drive sizes, and the full socket size list in each (look for gaps such as 16, 18 or 21mm)
  • the socket type, where the list gives it (six- or 12-point), plus E-sockets if your vehicles have star-shaped bolt heads
  • metric, AF or both, to match the vehicles and machines you work on
  • what makes up the piece count: sockets and spanners against bits, terminals and accessories
  • the case or chest, and its loaded weight, for where the kit will live or travel

Frequently Asked Questions

Will metric sockets fit imperial (AF) nuts?

Not reliably. Many AF sizes fall between metric ones: a 1/2in AF nut is 12.7mm across the flats, between a 12mm and a 13mm socket. Use AF sockets on imperial nuts; the 10002, for example, adds a metric and AF 3/4in socket set.

What are E-sockets, and do I need them?

E-sockets are female Torx-type sockets for bolts with a star-shaped head. If your vehicles have them, check the E sizes in the kit: the S01214 runs from E4 to E24 across three drives, while the 70282 stops at E8.

Is a household DIY kit good enough for car work?

Not on its own. Home kits such as the S01222 and 24892 hold screwdrivers, pliers, hex keys and a hammer, but no socket set. For car work, look for a mechanic’s kit with sockets, ratchets and combination spanners.

Does a tool kit include a spark plug socket?

Several mechanic’s kits do, in different sizes. The S01214 has a 16mm spark plug socket and the S01266 both 16mm and 21mm. Check the size against your plugs, and buy a missing size separately if needed.

Which kit case suits van or site work?

One that closes securely and that you can still lift when full. The AK7980HV case has lockable metal catches, and the S01266 portable tool chest kit has a carry handle but weighs 16.8kg.

Can I buy a kit already laid out in a tool chest or roller cabinet?

Yes. The S01267 pairs a six-drawer top chest and roll cab with a 247-piece kit in foam-lined drawers, at 36.2kg in total. Larger workshop kits, such as the 98885, come with a roller cabinet and a tool chest. Check the size against your space.

What else comes in a large technician’s kit?

Beyond sockets and spanners, the 12871 and 10002 add an automotive multimeter, a grease gun, an inspection mirror, a magnetic pick-up tool and a crimping tool with terminals. Check the contents against the jobs you actually do.

What should an apprentice or student mechanic buy first?

Start with your course or employer’s tool list, if there is one. A mechanic’s kit with 1/4in and 1/2in sockets, combination spanners, screwdrivers, pliers and hex keys covers the basics; add a torque wrench and breaker bar as the work needs them.
