Will a Roller Cabinet Last? Castors, Rust, Locks and Drawers
Cracked castors, rusty spanners, a lost key or a drill that will not fit the drawer: most roller cabinet regrets come down to four checks before you buy.
PartsForMachines lists 116 cabinets in its Roller Cabinets range, most of them mobile rollcabs from Sealey, Draper and Clarke.
Why Do Roller Cabinet Castors Fail, and Which Kind Lasts?
Castors carry the cabinet's full weight on every move, and rubber treads can turn brittle and crack with age. Polyurethane treads often outlast rubber and resist oil and grease better. Remember that a big cabinet is heavy before a single tool goes in: the 27333 BUNKER workbench cabinet weighs 182.5kg empty.
So look for large, heavy-duty wheels. The AP6612 12-drawer rollcab carries its weight of about 160kg on six Ø125mm PU/PP wheels, two of them lockable.
Will a Steel Roller Cabinet Rust in a Damp Garage?
The steel body is protected while its finish is sound; the tools inside are the bigger worry. Many rollcabs have a rust- and solvent-resistant powder coat, and the PTB67506SS stainless steel rollcab has a 430-grade stainless outer that resists solvents and rust. Touch up chips and keep the cabinet off a wet floor.
Humidity and condensation can rust tools, even inside a closed toolbox or cabinet. A vapour corrosion inhibitor (VCI) emitter in the drawer helps: its vapour forms a protective layer on the metal, so keep the drawers shut.
How Secure Is the Lock, and What If I Lose the Keys?
Treat a cabinet lock as a deterrent that keeps drawers shut and casual hands out, not as a safe. Almost every cabinet in the range locks, and on many a single key secures all the drawers. The AP33459 5-drawer rollcab goes further, adding a full-height locking mechanism at the back to its tumbler lock and folding keys.
Keys go missing, so note any number stamped on your key or lock today and keep the spare away from the cabinet. If both disappear, send that number and the cabinet model to our team.
Will Cordless Power Tools Fit in the Drawers?
They will if the deepest drawer is taller than your tallest tool with its battery fitted, so compare drawer heights before you buy. Shallow drawers suit sockets and spanners: the AP33479 has five medium drawers 70mm high, and some BUNKER drawers are just 50mm.
For drills and impact drivers, check the deep drawers: 150mm on the AP33459, 201mm on the AP3406 and 230mm on some half-width BUNKER drawers.
To charge batteries inside the cabinet, the AP4206BE mobile tool cabinet has a charging drawer with four 230V sockets, USB ports and its own lock, plus a 214mm-high large drawer.
What Should I Check Before I Buy?
- Castor size, tread material and how many castors have brakes or toe locks.
- The height of the deepest drawer against your tallest tool with its battery on.
- The load rating per drawer, especially for impact sockets and power tools.
- Lock type, any rear locking mechanism and how many keys come with it.
- The finish (powder coat or stainless steel) and the drawer liners.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I free a drawer jammed by a tool behind it?
Do not force it. Empty the drawer above or below, reach in and push the tool down or back, then try again. If there is still no room, take out the neighbouring drawer to get your hand in.
Can roller cabinet drawers be removed completely?
Often, yes. Ball-bearing slides with a lever disconnect are made for it: open the drawer fully, press the release lever on both slides and pull the drawer clear. Empty it first and check your manual, as designs vary.
Is a castor load rating per wheel or for the set?
Per castor. Add the cabinet's empty weight to your tools and divide by three rather than four, because on an uneven floor not every castor touches the ground and three may carry the whole load.
Will replacement castors fit my cabinet?
Only if they match the old ones. Send our team a photo of the old castor, its top plate and the cabinet model, and fit the same height on every corner so the cabinet sits level.
What stops a loaded cabinet tipping over?
Open one drawer at a time. The AP3406 6-drawer rollcab enforces this with a one-drawer safety system that reduces tipping risk, and Clarke HD Plus cabinets have push-lock drawers that stay shut if the cabinet is tilted.
How much weight can one drawer hold?
It varies, so check the rating. For example, the CBB230C's drawers take 35kg, the AP41206BR's slides 45kg, and BUNKER double-runner drawers 100kg static, against 50kg for single-runner ones.
Which drawer liner feels like rubber rather than foam?
Look for rubber. The AP28204BWS has rubber drawer liners; others use 2mm EVA, as on the AP3406, or foam, as in many Draper BUNKER drawers. Some lift out, such as the soft linings in the CBB226BLC, which makes cleaning easier.
Which dimensions matter in a small garage?
Width with the handles fitted, depth with a drawer fully open, and height if it must slide under a bench. A side handle adds more than you might expect: the 13-drawer CBB230C is 1420mm wide without handles and about 1498mm with them.
Do I need ball-bearing slides for heavy tools?
They help with heavy tools you open every day. Heavy-duty slides, such as the 45mm ball-bearing slides on the AP33459, can carry heavier loads, and cabinets like the PTB67506SS use double slide sets on large drawers.
