Rip-fence capacity is the maximum width that can be cut from the right-hand side of the blade. For typical timber-shop work (cutting boards to width up to 600mm), 600-800mm rip capacity is adequate. For panel-cutting (cutting sheet goods — plywood, MDF, melamine — to width), 1,200mm+ rip capacity is preferred (a typical 1,220mm × 2,440mm sheet can be ripped to half-width). For very large panel work, dedicated panel saws with sliding-table beds are more practical than table saws. The rip-fence capacity is listed on every product page.

The riving knife is a curved metal blade fitted just behind the blade — it follows the kerf cut by the blade and prevents the workpiece from closing onto and gripping the blade after the cut. Without a riving knife, kickback (the workpiece being thrown back at the operator) is a serious risk — particularly in ripping cuts where internal stress in the timber can close the kerf onto the blade. Always run the riving knife unless making a non-through cut (groove or rebate) where it physically prevents the cut. Replacement riving knives are available for most table saws.
