For wide surfaces (door panels, large furniture), wider belt widths reduce the number of overlapping passes needed. The longer belt length gives the belt longer cooling time per revolution — important on continuous heavy-duty sanding. Match by belt width primarily; the belt size is listed on every product page.

Standard wood-finishing progression: 60-grit (coarse — for heavy material removal, paint stripping, surface preparation); 80-grit (medium — general surface levelling); 120-grit (fine — pre-finish surface); 180-grit and finer (finishing — for varnish and lacquer-ready surfaces). Don't skip grits — each grit removes the scratches from the previous coarser grit. For metal work, ceramic and zirconia grain belts give longer life on stainless and hardened steel; aluminium-oxide is the general-purpose belt material. Belt tracking (the belt staying centred on the platen and roller) is set by the tracking adjustment — typically a knob or lever that tilts one of the rollers. Run the sander unloaded and adjust the tracking knob until the belt runs centred without drifting toward either edge. Also check: belt is fitted in the correct rotation direction (most belts have a directional arrow); rollers are clean and free of dust build-up; belt is not worn or stretched (replace if so). Frequent tracking drift usually means a worn belt or a worn roller bearing.
