Floor-standing belt sanders have integrated stand or pedestal — larger working envelope, longer belts (1,500-2,000mm+), more powerful motors, suited to daily trade and production use. For occasional finishing, bench-mounted is sufficient; for daily wood or metal finishing, floor-standing handles the workload better.

Belt-and-disc combo sanders combine a horizontal or vertical belt with a circular disc-sander on the side — versatile, allowing both belt-sanding (long-stroke flat work) and disc-sanding (curved-edge and end-grain work) on one machine. Dedicated belt sanders are belt-only — typically larger belts and more powerful motors. For general workshop use, the combo machine covers more applications; for production work focused on belt-sanding (large flat panels, long edges), a dedicated belt sander is more efficient.

Stage one: coarse grit (60-80) for surface preparation, removing milling marks and major surface defects. Stage two: medium grit (120-150) to refine the surface for finishing. Stage three: fine grit (180-220) for surfaces that will receive paint, varnish, or oil finish. For high-end finishes (polished hardwoods, fine cabinet work), continue to 320-400 grit and beyond. Skip-grade transitions (e.g., 60 to 220) leave deep scratches that show through the finer finish.
