Cetane number measures how readily diesel fuel ignites under compression — higher cetane means smoother combustion, better cold-start performance, and reduced injector wear. UK forecourt diesel typically carries a cetane number of 51–55. Cetane improvers raise this by several points, useful in older diesel engines that struggle with cold starts, in cold-climate operation, or where forecourt diesel quality is marginal. Modern common-rail engines benefit less than older indirect-injection diesels.

Approved OEM additives — those carried by major brands and specifically formulated within an OEM-approved service regime — generally retain warranty coverage.
