ISO VG 46 is the default for the majority of UK plant, agricultural, and industrial hydraulic systems operating at moderate temperatures — that's what your equipment handbook will specify in most cases. ISO VG 32 is used in cold-climate operations or for systems running at lower temperatures. ISO VG 68 is used in high-temperature continuous-duty applications, often in summer-only or hot-environment use. Always default to the equipment handbook's recommendation rather than substituting a different grade.

HM (or HLP) is the standard anti-wear hydraulic oil specification — suitable for most plant and agricultural hydraulics. HV adds high-viscosity-index improvers, giving better cold-start performance and a wider operating temperature range. HEES (sometimes called HEES-S) is a zinc-free, biodegradable fluid used where environmental contamination is a concern — forestry, marine, and watercourse-adjacent applications. Castrol Hyspin AWS, Shell Tellus S2, and Q8 Holbein are HM/HLP-grade. Specialist HV and HEES grades are supplied on request — contact the team for availability.

Yes, in most cases — as long as both fluids meet the same specification (e.g. both are ISO VG 46, anti-wear HM grade, with compatible additive chemistry). Mixing brands within the same specification category will not damage the system. Avoid mixing across specification categories — for example, topping up a zinc-free HEES system with a standard zinc-additive HM oil will compromise the biodegradable properties. For full system flushes, complete a drain and refill rather than mixing.
