FAQs

API GL-4 is formulated for synchromesh manual transmissions — the additive package balances anti-wear protection with synchroniser-friendly chemistry that won't damage brass synchroniser rings. API GL-5 is formulated for hypoid axles and differentials — higher anti-wear additive level for the high pressure of hypoid tooth contact, but the same additives can attack synchroniser brass. Don't substitute GL-5 for GL-4 in a synchromesh transmission unless the OEM explicitly approves it. The classification is on product pages.

Match the SAE grade to the equipment handbook. As guidance: SAE 80W-90 is the standard for tractor and plant transmissions in temperate climates; SAE 85W-140 is used for heavier-duty applications and warmer climates; SAE 75W-90 (synthetic) gives better cold-start flow and is often specified as a year-round alternative to mineral 80W-90 in modern tractor and commercial-vehicle drivelines. Always confirm against the OEM specification.

Generally not advisable for routine top-up beyond a small percentage. Mineral and synthetic base oils have different additive packages that can interact and reduce overall performance — particularly anti-wear and anti-foam properties. For small top-ups (under 10% of system capacity) the mixing is normally tolerable. For larger top-ups or full-fill, drain and refill with a single product. Check the equipment handbook — some OEMs explicitly prohibit mixing under warranty terms.

Yes — tractor universal transmission oils (UTTO) and farm-tractor hydraulic-and-transmission oils (covering John Deere J20D, Massey Ferguson M1135, Case-IH MS1207, and similar specifications) are available across the Shell, Castrol, and Q8 ranges. Match the OEM specification to the equipment requirement; the approvals are listed on product pages. UTTO oils replace separate gear oil and hydraulic oil in tractor systems where the manufacturer specifies a single fluid.

Returns are accepted within 30 days of purchase, in original packaging, on orders delivered within the United Kingdom. For damaged-on-arrival items, report within 24 hours with photographs to [email protected] — we will typically arrange collection and replacement at no cost to you. For parts that don't fit your machine, the Fit Guarantee covers a hassle-free return at no cost. For buyer's remorse — you've changed your mind or ordered the wrong item, email us first to obtain a Return Merchandise Number; a restocking fee may apply. Refunds are issued to the original payment method once the return is inspected.

Delivery time depends on the product, your destination, and availability — the estimated time for any item appears on the product page, and 'Check where we deliver' confirms coverage for your postcode before you order. Next-day delivery is available on most products; the option appears at checkout when applicable. We deliver across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Use the country selector at checkout to confirm coverage and delivery options for your destination.

Gear Oil

Within Oil, Gear Oil covers the specialist lubricating oils used in gearboxes, axles, differentials, transfer cases, and similar geared transmissions across plant equipment, agricultural tractors, commercial vehicles, and industrial machinery. Gear oils are formulated for high-pressure tooth contact, anti-wear protection, and the operating conditions of geared drives — different from engine oil and hydraulic oil in additive package, viscosity grade, and operating-temperature range. Within Gear Oil you will find the standard mineral and synthetic gear oils across the SAE viscosity grades commonly used in plant and agricultural transmissions — SAE 80W, 80W-90, 85W-140, and 75W-90 synthetic — and across the API GL classifications (GL-4 for synchromesh transmissions, GL-5 for hypoid axles and differentials). Parts For Machines is an Authorised Distributor and Seller of Shell, Castrol, and Q8 across the gear oil range. Shell covers the Spirax range — Spirax S2 and Spirax S6 covering mineral and synthetic gear oils for tractor, plant, and commercial-vehicle transmissions. Castrol covers Axle EPX and Syntrax product lines for axle, differential, and synchromesh applications. Q8 covers heavy-duty mineral and synthetic gear oils for plant, agricultural, and commercial-vehicle use. Sealey extends the range with own-label gear oils at trade pricing. Product pages list the SAE viscosity grade, the API GL classification, the OEM approvals (where relevant — MAN 342, MB 235, ZF TE-ML, Volvo VG, John Deere J20D etc.), the recommended operating-temperature range, and the pack size (typically 1-litre, 5-litre, 20-litre drums, with 208-litre barrels available on volume). For replacement gear oil on existing equipment, the equipment handbook lists the required viscosity grade, GL classification, and any specific OEM approval. Use these to match a suitable product. For mixed-fleet workshops, holding a 75W-90 synthetic and an 80W-90 mineral covers most automotive and plant gear-oil needs. Trade pricing on bulk and pallet orders is available; contact the team via WhatsApp 07754288583.
