Always check the equipment manual for the manufacturer's recommended oil specification. The specification typically gives: viscosity grade (e.g., SAE 75W-90), API/GL class (e.g., GL-5), and OEM-specific approval (e.g., Volvo 97312, MAN 342, MB-Approval 235.0). All three must be matched. Do not substitute on viscosity alone — different transmissions need different additive packages, friction modifiers, and wear additives. Wrong-spec oil can cause synchroniser damage, clutch-pack slipping (in automatic transmissions), and accelerated wear. The product page lists each oil's specifications and approvals.

API GL classification rates the load-carrying capacity and additive package of gear oils. GL-4: moderate extreme-pressure (EP) additive levels — suited to synchronised manual gearboxes (the EP additives in GL-5 oils can attack synchroniser brass at low gearbox speeds). GL-5: high EP additive levels — required for hypoid axles where the gear-tooth pressure is very high. GL-4/5: combined formulation suitable for both applications. Modern manual gearboxes specify GL-4 (or GL-4/5); modern hypoid axles specify GL-5. Mismatching can cause synchroniser pitting (using GL-5 in a synchronised gearbox).

Dexron is the GM-specified ATF specification family; Mercon is the Ford-specified equivalent. Dexron II: older specification, suited to early-generation electronic automatic transmissions. Dexron III: improved oxidation resistance, suited to mid-1990s onwards. Dexron VI: latest GM specification, backwards-compatible with III. Mercon V: Ford specification, generally compatible with Dexron III applications. Specialist OEM ATF grades (ZF, Aisin, Mercedes, BMW) have their own specifications and should be used where specified — substitution can cause clutch-pack issues. Transmission oil-change service kits (with the matching oil quantity, sealing washers for drain and fill plugs, and replacement filters where applicable for the specific equipment), fluid-fill pumps (for filling transmissions where the fill point is at gearbox-side level rather than top-fill), and fluid-extraction tools (for removing old oil through the dipstick tube on equipment without bottom drain plugs) are available alongside the transmission-oil range.
