The convention is fixed: white position markers face forward, red face rearward, and amber side markers run along the length. Indicators are amber all round. Each lamp's E-mark approval is category-specific — a marker approval doesn't make a lamp a legal indicator — so match the function as listed on the product page.

It scales with length — longer trailers and bodies require markers at intervals along their sides, plus end-outline markers on the widest vehicles. Rather than memorising the schedule, match what the trailer was built with: replace like positions for like, and Ask Simon can sanity-check an unusual configuration from a photo.

Vibration, water and impact — the trailer trifecta. Filament bulbs shake apart, poor IP sealing fogs and corrodes lamps on washed-down equipment, and hedge and bay strikes finish the rest. Multivolt LED markers with IP67-plus sealing fix the first two; buying in fleet quantities acknowledges the third.

Functionally it can cause flash-rate problems — LED indicators draw so little current that bulb-era flasher relays speed up or misread them as failures. Mixed fleets either fit load resistors or, more sensibly, upgrade the flasher relay and standardise on LED. The current draw is listed per lamp.

Side lights and indicator lights make long vehicles and machinery readable on the road: the side marker lamps along trailers and bodies, the front and rear position lamps, and the indicators and repeaters that signal intent. Side marker lamps are the volume item, amber markers along the length of trailers and long bodies, white front and red rear position markers at the corners, in the surface-mount, stalk and recessed formats trailer builders use, with LED the trade standard.
