A surface pump sits outside the water and draws it up, which is the opposite of a submersible. That makes it suitable where the water cannot be reached, or where the pump needs to be accessible, and it means the suction lift matters as much as the flow rate. A surface pump also has to be primed, which a submersible sitting in the water never does.
Head is the figure that matters alongside flow, and it is easy to overlook. Head is how high the pump will push water, quoted at 50m on the Clarke booster here. A pump with generous flow and insufficient head will move a lot of water a short distance and none at all up a rise.
Booster pumps exist to raise pressure in an existing supply rather than to move water from a source. That is a different job from a transfer pump, and it is why they are specified on pressure and flow together rather than on volume alone. Multi stage pumps raise pressure through several impellers rather than one, which is how they reach a higher head.
Body material follows the water. Stainless resists corrosion where the water is not clean or the pump runs continuously. Automatic control starts the pump on demand rather than needing a switch, which is what makes a booster usable in a supply.
