Two key numbers: rated flow (litres per minute, sized to the watering coverage you need — a typical garden sprinkler set draws 10-15 L/min; a livestock trough refill needs 20-40 L/min) and rated head (the vertical lift in metres from water source to highest delivery point, plus pressure-loss allowance for hose runs and fittings). For pressure-boost applications, look at the pressure rating in bar at the outlet; for irrigation, look at flow at a typical operating pressure. Both values are listed on every pump product page.

A surface-mounted (above-ground) pump sits at or near the water source and draws water through a suction hose — used for water transfer, pressure boosting, and most garden-and-grounds applications. Limited by suction head (typically 6-8 metres maximum vertical lift on the suction side). A submersible pump sits in the water — fully immersed in a well, sump, or pond — and pushes water up to the surface. Used for boreholes, sumps, deep wells, and pond and water-feature applications. Submersible pumps handle higher lift heads but cost more and need waterproof power cable.

The UK and European garden-hose standard (often called Hozelock-style or quick-connect) is widely interchangeable — most quick-connect hose fittings, tap connectors, sprinkler couplings, and accessories work across the major brands at this standard. Within agricultural and trade applications, BSP threaded fittings (1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, 1-inch) are the standard — fully cross-compatible. Drain all water from pumps, hose reels, and exposed pipework before the first hard frost. For permanently-installed pumps, fit a drain-down valve at the lowest point and isolate from the supply. For exposed pipework that can't be drained, lag with foam pipe insulation rated for outdoor use, and consider a frost-protection trace heater on critical lines. Submersible pumps in below-frost-line installations are normally unaffected. Most pump damage occurs from water freezing inside the pump body — drain-down before freezing weather is the simplest prevention.
