The specification typically gives: viscosity grade (e.g., SAE 75W-90), API/GL class (e.g., GL-5), and OEM-specific approval (e.g., Volvo 97312, MAN 342, MB-Approval 235.0). All three must be matched. Do not substitute on viscosity alone — different transmissions need different additive packages, friction modifiers, and wear additives. API GL classification rates the load-carrying capacity and additive package of gear oils.
