For mixed seasoned hardwood and softwood up to 300mm diameter, 7-12 tonne is the contractor standard. For green hardwood and large diameters (300-500mm+), 15-30+ tonne commercial splitters are required. Knotty and crotch logs require more tonnage than straight-grained logs of the same diameter.

Horizontal splitters are best for processing pre-cut log lengths — operator stands at the side, places the log on the beam, and the wedge splits it. Comfortable for high-volume work. Vertical splitters are better for very large or heavy logs that can't be lifted onto a horizontal beam — the log is rolled or skidded to the splitter base, the wedge drives down.
