An external coil spring compressor is the standard tool — claws or hooks fit around the outside of the coil spring and a threaded rod or hydraulic ram compresses the spring so the strut can be disassembled. An internal strut compressor is used where the spring is inside a cup or cage — the compressor is fitted from above and below to compress the spring without external claws. Less common in modern automotive applications but used on certain commercial-vehicle and heavy-vehicle suspensions.

Mechanical ball-joint presses use a threaded screw mechanism and adapter cups to push the ball joint out of the steering arm or hub — workable for cars and light vehicles where the ball joint isn't seized solid.
