Match the booster's peak current rating to the engine size and battery the booster is starting. For petrol cars and light vans (up to 2.5L), 400-700 amps peak is sufficient. For larger petrol and small diesel engines (2.5-4L), 700-1,200 amps peak is the trade standard. For light commercial diesels and 4×4s (4-6L), 1,500-2,000 amps. For HGVs, agricultural tractors, and plant equipment (6L+), 2,500-4,000+ amp boosters with 12V/24V capability are required.

Lithium-ion boosters are lighter (sometimes 1/3 the weight of an equivalent lead-acid booster), faster to charge, hold their charge longer between uses, and don't suffer the slow-decline problem of lead-acid packs. They're more expensive but increasingly the standard for new boosters. Lead-acid boosters are heavier and slower to charge but generally have higher peak boost currents. For mobile and roadside use, lithium-ion is typically preferred; for fixed-bay workshop use, lead-acid is still common.

All booster batteries (lead-acid and lithium-ion) self-discharge over time. Lead-acid: charge fully every 1-3 months when not in regular use. Lithium-ion: charge fully every 3-6 months when stored. After every use, recharge before storage to avoid leaving the booster in a partially-discharged state for extended periods (which damages capacity over time). Most modern boosters have a charge-status indicator on the front panel.

Replacement clamps (sized to the original cable cross-section), replacement cranking leads, mains-charger units, and replacement integrated batteries (where the design allows user-serviceable battery replacement) are available for the majority of Draper, SIP, and Sealey boosters. Boosters are essential workshop, fleet-yard, roadside-assistance, and breakdown-recovery kit, providing a compact, rechargeable cranking-power source independent of mains power and other vehicles.

Parts for Machines supplies boosters across the trade and professional ranges, with rated peak boost currents typically running from 400 amps (light-vehicle car-and-van use) up to 4,000 amps and above (heavy commercial-vehicle, agricultural, and plant boosting). Battery technologies range from traditional sealed lead-acid packs (heavier but high cranking-current capacity) to lithium-ion packs (lighter, faster-charging, and increasingly the trade default for new boosters).
