These files arrive with the handle already fitted, which is the difference from the files sold on the tang elsewhere in the range. That matters because a file worked without a handle puts the bare tang into the palm, and it is the reason handles exist at all. A bare tang also cannot be pushed properly, so the file is worked with less force than it should be.
Profile follows the surface being worked and cannot be substituted. A round file will not flatten, a flat file will not follow a radius, and a square file cuts an internal corner that neither of the others reaches. The profile is chosen before the length. Profile is stated per file rather than being inferred from the length or the width.
Length is then chosen against the surface as on any file, since a short file follows a hollow already present while a longer one bridges it. Lengths here run 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm across the four profiles held. Both figures are stamped on the file so it can be identified once it is out of its packaging.
A soft grip handle changes how long the file can be worked rather than how it cuts. Over a long session the grip is what limits the work, and a fitted soft grip is the practical difference between a file that gets used and one that does not.
