A jack plane (typical sole length 350-380mm) is the workshop general-purpose plane — used for flattening boards, removing twists, and rough-to-smooth preparation. A smoothing plane (shorter sole, typically 230-250mm) follows the jack plane for final smoothing — produces a fine surface ready for finishing. A block plane (compact, 150mm sole) is for end-grain work, chamfering, and trim — held in one hand. Most woodworking hand-plane kits include all three.

Two-stage sharpening: coarse stone or diamond plate (typical 250-400 grit) to set the basic edge geometry; fine stone (typical 1000-3000 grit) to polish the edge to a working sharpness. For premium tools, an extra-fine finishing stone (6000-8000 grit) gives the finest edge for fine cabinet work. Use a sharpening guide (a jig that holds the blade at a consistent angle) for repeatable results. Honing oils or water (matched to the stone type) keep the surface clean during sharpening.

Three saws cover most carpentry work: a panel saw (cross-cut, 22-26 inch blade with 7-10 TPI) for general crosscutting; a tenon saw (8-12 inch blade with 12-15 TPI, with a brass or steel back) for joinery cuts; a dovetail saw (6-8 inch blade with 18-22 TPI) for fine joinery. For ripping (cutting along the grain), a ripping panel saw with 4-6 TPI cuts faster than a cross-cut saw used for ripping. Match the saw to the work.
