The size is read off the fastener rather than guessed, because a TX-STAR driver one size out either will not enter or will turn inside the recess and round it. Unlike a slot, there is no partial engagement that still works: it either fits or it damages. Size is marked on the driver as well as being stamped on the fastener recess.
The sizes here run T6, T7, T8 and T9 on the plain drivers and T10, T15 and T20 on the security drivers, which puts the plain range at the fine end and the security range in the sizes where those fasteners are actually used. The two ladders overlap at no point, so the fastener type narrows the range before the size does.
A security driver has a hole down the centre to clear the pin standing in the middle of the fastener. Without that hole the driver bottoms on the pin and never reaches the flutes, which is what happens when a plain driver is tried on a security fastener. The pin is fitted precisely to prevent a plain driver being used, which is the whole point of it.
A security driver will also turn a plain fastener of the same size, since the pin hole is simply unused. That makes the security form the wider tool where both appear, at the cost of being the wrong tool for nothing.
