Three matching dimensions: blade length (the total loop length, normally given on the original blade label), blade width (the strip width — typical metal-cutting bandsaws use 13mm, 19mm, or 27mm blades), and TPI (teeth per inch — match to the material thickness, see the next FAQ). Tooth-set (raker, alternate, or wavy) and material grade (carbon steel for general work, bi-metal for heavy and stainless work) are secondary specs. The original blade label or the bandsaw manual gives the matching dimensions.

TPI (teeth per inch) matches material thickness: thinner material needs more teeth in contact with the cut. For sheet metal (under 3mm), 18-24 TPI. For light bar and section (3-6mm), 14-18 TPI. For medium bar and section (6-15mm), 10-14 TPI. For heavy bar and section (15-50mm), 6-10 TPI. For very thick sections (50mm+), 4-6 TPI. Wrong TPI causes tooth strip, vibration, or clogging. HSS (high-speed steel) covers general-purpose metal drilling in mild steel, aluminium, brass, and the softer metals — the workshop default. Cobalt-alloy HSS (typically 5% or 8% cobalt) handles harder metals — stainless steel, hard alloy steel, hardened-tool grades — at moderate speeds. Carbide bits handle the hardest materials (cast iron, hardened tool steel, ceramic) at lower speeds with rigid setup — used in pillar-drill and machine-tool work, not handheld. Match bit grade to the hardest material the bit will see.

Life depends on usage intensity and the work material. For general-purpose bench grinder wheels: typically 30-60 hours of use before re-dressing; lifetime to replacement around 100-200 hours of cumulative use. For linisher belts: 5-30 hours per belt depending on grit (coarse belts wear faster). Heavy stainless and tool-steel grinding wears consumables much faster than mild-steel work. Re-dress wheels regularly to maintain cut quality; replace when the wheel diameter is reduced to its rated minimum.
