Locking wheel nuts have two states and each needs a different tool. If the key is lost but the nut is sound, a marque key set finds the matching pattern. If the nut is damaged or rounded, no key will engage it and a removal set has to bite into it instead. Establishing which of the two states applies is what decides between a key set and a removal set.
Marque key sets are held by manufacturer for that reason: Audi at 22 pieces, BMW at 22, BMW and Mini at 10 and 21, VAG at 20, 22 and 23, VW at 12 and Land Rover at 10. The pattern is specific to the maker rather than to a size.
Removal sets are sized by the nut they grip rather than by pattern, at 17 to 27.5mm across the 8 piece set, with 2, 5 and 10 piece sets alongside. They cut into the nut, which means the nut is replaced afterwards rather than reused. A removal set is also the answer where the key exists but has been rounded by use.
