The hydrometer uses a colour-coded graduated scale with a resolution of 0.005 g/ml and an overall measurement range of 1.10–1.30 g/ml. Readings in the red zone (1.100–1.205 g/ml) indicate a discharged battery, readings in the white zone (1.205–/ml) indicate the battery requires attention, readings in the green zone (1.260–1.300 g/ml) indicate the battery is fully charged. Calibration should be carried out at 20°C to ensure accurate results. Constructed from a glass tube with a PVC bulb and spout, the instrument is designed for repeated workshop use. Care must always be taken when removing battery cell caps and when conducting the test, given the corrosive nature of battery electrolyte.
