Colour on a fuel can is a code rather than a choice, and using it correctly is what stops the wrong fuel going into a machine. Green is unleaded, black is diesel and red is the third code. A can filled against its colour is a can that will eventually be misused. The code also survives the can being lent, moved or stored, which the memory of whoever filled it does not.
That is why cans and spouts are held in matching colours. A green spout on a black can defeats the coding at the moment it matters, which is when someone else picks the can up rather than the person who filled it. A can that has held one fuel is also not simply washed out and used for another.
Material decides where the can lives rather than what it holds. Steel survives being knocked about in a vehicle or a yard and does not degrade in sunlight. Plastic is lighter and does not corrode, which suits a can kept indoors and carried by hand. Steel spouts are held in all three colours so the coding runs through the whole assembly.
Capacity runs 5L, 10L and 20L, and the practical limit is what can be lifted and poured rather than what is needed. A full 20L can is heavy to tip accurately.
