Trickle charger — low output (typically 1-2A), used to maintain charge on a battery in storage or on a vehicle that's used infrequently. Cannot recharge a flat battery in reasonable time. Smart charger — microprocessor-controlled multi-stage charger that adjusts output as the battery charges; the trade default for daily workshop charging. Rapid charger — high output (typically 20-100A), used in time-pressured fleet workshops to fast-charge multiple batteries. Rapid charging stresses the battery and shortens service life if used routinely; smart-charging at moderate currents is gentler.

Match peak amps (PA) to the application. Cars and light vans — 600-800 PA covers most petrol and diesel engines up to ~3.0 litres. Larger diesels, vans, and 4×4s — 1,000-1,200 PA. Commercial vehicles, tractors, and plant — 1,500-2,000 PA at 12V; for 24V systems (heavier commercial), 3,000+ PA combined 12V/24V output. The Sealey RoadStart range covers the spectrum from 600 PA emergency packs through to 3,000 PA twin-voltage commercial units. Always size up rather than down — an undersized booster cycles rapidly and may fail to crank in cold conditions.

Most modern smart chargers — Sealey, SIP, Draper — explicitly support AGM and EFB battery chemistries through dedicated charging programmes that adjust voltage and current curves to the battery type. The charger will have a chemistry-selector switch or auto-detection. Charging an AGM battery on a basic flooded-battery-only charger can over-pressurise the AGM and damage it. Always check the charger specification supports your battery chemistry before connecting. Lithium-ion batteries require a dedicated lithium charger and must not be charged on lead-acid chargers.
