Tank capacity is chosen against the largest thing that will go in it, not against how much washing there is to do. A gearbox casing needs a tank it will lie flat in with room for a brush to work round it, and no amount of running time makes a small tank take a large casing. Getting the tank right first time avoids a machine that handles the easy jobs and none of the awkward ones.
That is why capacity here spans a wide range, from 9 litres on the portable machine up to 90 litres on the largest. The 9L body handles carburettors and small assemblies. The 54.5L floor standing machine takes a cylinder head. The 90L machine takes what the others cannot.
Mounting decides where the washer lives and how it is used. A portable machine is carried to the job and put away afterwards. A bench-mounted machine at 12 litres frees the floor and sits at working height. A floor standing machine is always ready but occupies a permanent position.
