Blade count is really a measure of resolution rather than range. A 10 blade set gives coarse steps and a 32 blade set fills in between them, which matters when a clearance falls between two blades and has to be made up by stacking. A blade that is close but not exact reads as a pass when the clearance is actually wrong.
Marking has to match the specification being worked to. A metric-only set is no use against an imperial figure and the reverse is equally true. Dual marked blades carry both, which removes the conversion and the risk that comes with doing it at the engine. A dual marked set also removes the need to keep two sets and pick the right one under a bonnet.
Blade form decides whether the gauge reaches the gap at all. A straight blade suits an open clearance. An offset blade steps round an obstruction. An angled tappet gauge reaches a valve clearance under a rocker where a straight blade cannot be presented squarely. Sealey hold 12, 13, 26 and 32 blade sets with Draper covering the same span in metric and imperial.
Extra long blades at 26 blade combination reach a gap set deep in an assembly, where a standard blade runs out before it arrives. A gauge is read by feel rather than sight, so the blade has to enter cleanly.
