Match the ramp's rated capacity per pair to the vehicle's gross weight, with safety margin. For cars and light commercials up to 2,000kg, 1-2 tonne per pair is sufficient. For larger cars, light vans, and 4×4 vehicles up to 3,000kg, 2-3 tonne per pair. For commercial vans and HGV-light recovery work up to 4,500kg, 4-6 tonne per pair. Always specify capacity per pair (the rated total when both ramps are in use) — never per individual ramp. The rated capacity is listed on every ramp product page.

Low-clearance and lowered vehicles (sports cars, modified cars, vehicles with body kits) need low-profile ramps with shallow approach angles — typical 14-17 degrees vs 20+ degrees on standard ramps. Some sports-car-specific ramps have multi-section designs (a low-angle approach section followed by a steeper section) to reach a working lift height without scraping the front spoiler. Measure the vehicle's lowest front clearance before specifying — the ramp's approach-angle and underside-clearance specifications are on every product page.

Steel ramps: highest capacity, most durable for daily commercial use, heavier (typically 15-30kg per pair). The trade-workshop standard for general use. Aluminium ramps: lighter (typically 5-12kg per pair), more portable, easier to move and stow, generally lower capacity for the equivalent design. Suited to mobile-service applications where weight matters more than maximum capacity. For most workshops, steel; for mobile and home use, aluminium. Most trade-grade drive-on ramps are supplied with the rear-stop block (the welded or bolt-on stop at the top of the ramp that prevents the vehicle from rolling off the end). Wheel chocks for the wheels remaining on the ground (to prevent vehicle roll while on the ramp) are sometimes included, sometimes a separate accessory.
