Castrol was founded in 1899 by Charles ""Cheers"" Wakefield as C.C. Wakefield & Co., with the Castrol name coined from the castor oil added to early engine lubricants. The company became Castrol Ltd in 1960, joined Burmah-Castrol in 1966, and has been part of BP since 2000. The UK Technology Centre is at Pangbourne, Oxfordshire.
