A kit is assembled around a trade, and that is what should be judged rather than the number printed on the case. Two kits of the same piece count can serve entirely different work, so the contents list decides whether the kit fits the bay or leaves gaps that get filled later anyway. A kit bought on the number alone tends to be supplemented within weeks, which is the more expensive route.

Trade kits are the broad purchases. An automotive technicians kit at 281 pieces equips a bay from nothing, and an agricultural technicians kit covers the different fastener sizes and heavier work that plant brings. Both are bought once rather than added to gradually.

Job-specific kits work the other way, covering one recurring task completely. An alternator pulley tool kit at 30 pieces, a terminal tool kit at 23 pieces and a hose clip removal set covering 18 to 54mm each solve a problem that a general kit cannot, however large it is.
