A timing kit is bought against an engine, not a vehicle, and the two are not the same thing. The same model can carry more than one engine over a production run, and a kit that fits one will not lock the other. The engine code is what identifies the right kit. Fitting a belt to the wrong marks is an engine rebuild rather than a repeat of the job.

The ETK ladder is coded rather than named for that reason. ETK110, ETK111 and ETK112 cover Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen applications, ETK121, ETK125 and ETK131 cover BMW and MINI, and ETK150 covers Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Lancia.

Belt and chain drive engines need different tools even within the same marque. A belt drive kit locks the camshaft and crankshaft while the belt is off. A chain drive engine needs the chain tensioned and the wear checked, which is a different set of tools entirely. Locking points also move between generations of the same engine, so the year matters alongside the code.

Multi-marque kits cover several applications where the locking points happen to coincide, which is better value where a workshop sees a spread of vehicles.
