Turning an engine over and holding it still are opposite jobs that both need a tool. A crankshaft rotator engages the flywheel or the pulley to turn the engine to a position. A holding tool stops it turning while a bolt is torqued or released. Both are also needed on the same job more often than not, since the engine is turned to a position and then held there.
Both are vehicle specific because the engagement point differs. Rotators here are listed for DAF, MAN, Scania, Mercedes and Volvo commercial vehicles on 1/2 inch square drive, and holding tools for Citroen, Peugeot, Toyota, Vauxhall 1.0 and 1.2 belt drive and BMW N47 and N57. A rotator also lets the engine be turned by hand rather than on the starter, which is the only safe way with the belt off.
Pulley alignment is a third job again. A crankshaft pulley alignment tool sets the pulley to the correct position on the nose before it is tightened, which matters where the pulley is not keyed and can be fitted wrong. Commercial rotators engage the flywheel through an inspection cover rather than at the pulley.
Removal uses a puller rather than a lever. A harmonic balancer puller draws the balancer off square, and an alternator pulley tool kit at 13 pieces covers the splined and multi-point pulley fittings that no socket engages.
