A trim clip is designed to be difficult to remove, because it holds a panel that should not rattle. Levering one out with a screwdriver marks the trim and usually breaks the clip, which turns a ten minute job into ordering parts. A broken clip also leaves the panel loose until the replacement arrives, which is the worse outcome.
Trim tools work by spreading the load across the panel rather than concentrating it at a point. That is why they are wide and thin, and why the profile matters: a U-profile fits round a clip stem and a V-profile gets under a flat edge. Nylon construction also means the tool flexes against the panel rather than gouging it.
Reach decides which clips can be got at. A 250mm tool covers most door and dashboard work. A long reach tool at 510mm gets to a clip set well behind a panel edge, where a short tool cannot be angled onto the clip at all. Trim clip removal pliers at 240mm grip the clip and pull it rather than levering under it.
