By the plug profile: PCL is the longer British pattern, Euro the short continental one, and within PCL the family name, Airflow, XF, Vertex, InstantAir or Safeflow, is on the listing of every matching part. A photo of the old fitting over WhatsApp settles an unmarked one, since the profile shape and length name the family.

No, and no force will make them: a plug only seats in a socket of its own pattern. A line meets the other pattern through an adaptor from the adaptors leaf, never through a mismatched pair.

The thread form on the coupling body: the parallel forms here carry female threads and seal on a washer, the tapered forms carry male threads and seal as they tighten, and each listing names its form and size from quarter to half inch.

One with a hose barb instead of a thread: the tail pushes into the hose bore and clips secure it, so the coupling matches the hose by bore, with quarter and three eighth inch tails the common picks.

Both: the screw adaptors and double ended connectors here come sold loose and in packs of three and five, the pack route suiting workshops that plumb several drops at once.

The one the tools already wear: match whatever pattern is on the existing tools and lines, and where starting clean, PCL is the British default with the widest fitting choice on this shelf, 253 PCL pattern lines against 49 Euro.

A coupling is picked by its family first, because families never mix: a plug only mates with a socket of the same pattern. PCL is the longer British default and Euro the short continental type that never mates with it, and the Family filter sorts the whole shelf of 339 couplings by pattern before size even enters the choice.

The families themselves are named on every listing. The PCL side runs from the classic Airflow couplings, in parallel female and tapered male thread forms, through the XF and Vertex ranges to InstantAir, Safeflow and the Standard and 100 Series lines, with Euro couplings covering the continental pattern. Matching the family on the old fitting, or on the tools the line must serve, is the first and biggest step, and once the family is right every plug and socket in it mates.

Then the end decides the exact part. Couplings come with female threads, male threads, tailpieces for hose barbs and screw adaptor forms, in quarter, three eighths and half inch BSP, with bores from six to thirteen millimetres across the shelf and the Size and Thread filters doing the narrowing. Double ended connectors join two hoses in line, sold loose and in packs of three and five, and hose coupling adaptors run up from one inch for the delivery hose sizes.

Where a line built on one pattern must take the other, the adaptors leaf next door bridges them rather than forcing a mismatch. An unmarked coupling photographs well: the profile length and shape name the family, so a photo over WhatsApp on 07754288583 comes back with the pattern and the part named, which beats measuring threads on a worn fitting every time.
