VDE 1,000V insulated pliers are required for any work on live electrical circuits up to 1,000V — the insulation prevents shock if the tool contacts a live conductor. Required for electrical-installation work in commercial and industrial settings under BS EN 60900 and similar regulations. Standard PVC-handled pliers are NOT insulation-rated and should not be used on live circuits. For workshop electrical service work (vehicle electrics, plant electrical service), VDE-insulated pliers give the safety margin even where the circuits are nominally isolated.

Chrome-vanadium (Cr-V) is the workshop standard — strong, hard-wearing, suited to general gripping and cutting work. The most common plier construction. Chrome-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) is harder and tougher than Cr-V, used in impact-rated and heavy-duty applications where the tool may experience shock loading. Most workshop pliers are Cr-V; specialist heavy-duty and impact pliers are Cr-Mo. Cutting-edge pliers (side cutters, diagonal cutters, cable cutters) typically use specific high-carbon steel for the cutting edge with Cr-V or Cr-Mo body.

Circlip pliers come in internal and external patterns — internal circlips spread to grip an internal groove (gearbox bearings, bushing housings); external circlips compress to grip an external shaft groove (axle ends, output shafts). Tip sizes match the circlip eye — typical sizes 0.9mm, 1.4mm, 1.8mm, 2.3mm tip diameters cover most circlip ranges. Bent-tip and straight-tip patterns are available; bent-tip works in confined access. For trade workshop use, a 4-piece set covers internal-straight, internal-bent, external-straight, external-bent.
