Pneumatic engravers: faster tip-action (typical 10,000-25,000 strokes per minute), better suited to hard metals (hardened steel, stainless), no battery-life limit, but require a compressor with sufficient CFM (typical 0.5-1.0 CFM at 90psi for engravers). Best for high-volume asset marking in workshops with compressed air available. Electric engravers: portable, no compressor needed, slower tip-action (typical 3,000-6,000 strokes per minute), suitable for soft metals (aluminium, brass, mild steel) and most plastics. Best for occasional asset marking and field-service ID work.

Hardened steel and stainless require carbide-tipped engraver nibs — standard high-speed-steel nibs cannot mark hardened materials. Use a pneumatic engraver (electric tools struggle on hardened materials) with a carbide tip rated for the work. Apply firm pressure for clear engraving (the tip should bite into the surface, not skid across it); engrave at moderate speed for deep clear marks. For very hard materials (case-hardened steel, hardened tool steels), specialist diamond-tip engravers are available — these mark hardness levels beyond carbide capability.

Tip life depends on the material being engraved and the tip material. Carbide tips: typical 50-200+ marking jobs in mild steel, 20-50 in stainless, 10-30 in hardened steel. Diamond tips: 200-500+ marking jobs across all materials, but expensive replacement cost. High-speed-steel tips: 20-50 marking jobs in mild steel and aluminium only — not suitable for harder materials. Replace tips when engraving becomes faint or skips — worn tips cannot make clean marks. Replacement tips are available alongside the engraver range.
