The mat is made from vulcanised rubber, which handles what a working footwell actually receives: grit off site boots, water in winter, and the constant scuffing of feet against the pedal box. A textile mat absorbs all three; rubber sheds them.
It is waterproof and oil and mud resistant, so spills and wet stay on the surface rather than soaking through to the floor pan, which is where corrosion begins in an older van in particular.
