Shot blasting is a high-CFM application — typical trade cabinets consume 10-30 CFM continuously at 6-8 bar / 90-120 PSI during blasting. The workshop compressor's continuous-duty CFM rating at the operating pressure must equal or exceed the cabinet's CFM demand. For continuous blasting work, a 15-20 CFM compressor minimum is the practical baseline. Under-supplied cabinets result in slow cleaning, reduced media velocity, and operator frustration. Glass bead: peening / fine surface finish without aggressive material removal — good for cleaning aluminium and brass without surface damage; the standard for cosmetic and finish work. Aluminium oxide: aggressive cutting, removes rust, paint, and surface contamination quickly; the workshop standard for general blast-cabinet work. Garnet: harder than aluminium oxide, used for heavy-rust removal and hard-coating stripping. Plastic media: soft, used on delicate surfaces (carbon fibre, painted parts). Match the media to the substrate and the application.

Three reasons: (1) operator visibility — without extraction, the cabinet rapidly fills with airborne abrasive and contamination, blocking the viewing window; (2) operator safety — dust escaping into the workshop is a respiratory hazard; (3) abrasive recovery — extraction systems separate fine spent media from coarse usable media, extending the abrasive's useful life. Replacement gloves (the rubber gauntlets through which the operator handles components inside the cabinet — the most frequent service item; typically vendor-specific), replacement blast nozzles (sized to the gun and the air pressure; tungsten-carbide nozzles last longest), replacement viewing-window covers (clear protective films that fit over the main window to extend its life), and replacement dust-extraction filter elements are available for the majority of SIP, Sealey, and Draper blast cabinets.
